This is a quintessential ‘greasy spoon’ — If you want a bona fide fry-up, come here. Sitting amongst discoloured furniture and listening to the banter between the owners and regulars I began appreciate this old English tradition of going to your local café on a Saturday to gorge yourself on great grub and basking in the following self-satisfaction. Chunky stodge that fills that empty spot like no other — now and then an English Breakfast is imperative if you regard yourself as a dignified Englishmen of any kind. Not really of course — but I’d highly recommend that you do head to Kings if you ever fancy indulging in one. The archetypal greasy spoon lives on.

For many years myself and my dad have made Saturday morning’s traditional fry up time and one of our favourite places to visit is King’s Sandwich bar on Silver Street. It’s small, intimate and greasy which is exactly the way any respectable breakfast café should be. There’s nothing better than sitting in King’s and shaking off a hangover with a cuppa, a newspaper and of course a huge fry up. I’ve always found this place to have a community feel with customers and staff always ready to have a chat with you and that again is a staple of any good café in my humble opinion. They do a few different sizes of breakfast here from small manageable portions for children, to huge belly busting breakfasts which require a good amount of willpower to get through. All in all everything that a greasy spoon should be and more.

Don’t you think there is something quintessentially British about greasy spoon cafes? The grease lined walls, the brown sauce dispenser shaped as a plastic brown tomato, the yellow of an egg yolk splattered on the floor. All of these things make me hungry and the Full English beats any other breakfast I have ever tasted. I got the full English for around 3.50 plus tea. The tea had so much sugar in it I could stand my spoon vertically in the cup with no support from the side, great stuff! My beans, fried egg, tomato and sausage were really nice. I think the sausages they use are Cumberland, nice and fat and juicy with little gristle. My girlfriend hates the fact that one of my favourite things to eat is black pudding. Now when eating black pudding it is best not to think about what it actually is. I tend to take this approach with most meats; I hate the idea that people give livestock names only to eat them later on down the road. I take a similar approach with black pudding. You can always tell how good the food is in an establishment by the quality of their black pudding. Kings sandwich bar serves a great breakfast and an even better piece of black pudding. So goo I sometimes skip the Full English and just have the BP in a sandwich.
