So, in my wanderings around the City yesterday, I decided it was about time I visited the Custard Factory(as I hadn’t been in the day time in an age). Wow, it’s changed from my last foray into this neck of the woods. A newish little gem that has popped up is McTunney’s sweet store. After receiving a bag of samples in my «Alfie Birds» opening night goodybag, I kinda knew what to expect, however, I hadn’t expected such a cute little store to have such a large selection. I popped in to give them a Unilocal Sticker for their window, but ended up spending a good 20 minutes perusing their wares and chatting to the lovely owner. When you walk in you will be slightly overwhelmed with the shelves and shelves of sugary goodness. There are import wares, strange bits and pieces I had never seen before and a huge choice of old fashioned jars of toffees, bon bons and hard sweets. I was totally charmed by the hardwood aesthetic, weighing scales and memories of my youth(Bazooka Joe and Bubbly, anyone?). Although I had gone in with a purpose, I couldn’t resist buying a couple of bits as gifts and treating myself to a bag of banana bon bons(which are apparently flying off the shelves). Most of the jarred offerings are £1 for 100g, but it’s of note that an Independent Birmingham card gets you 10% off weighed sweets. They also accept card payments over £1, so you don’t have to count your pennies to buy a quick pick-me-up. As well as sweets, they had cold drinks, cupcakes and a number of other tooth decay inducing treats. I will warn you, if you do take a few minutes to pop in here; you WILL end up buying more than you intended(and that’s no bad thing). Here’s to McTunney’s! Bringing you memories of childhood and delicious new discoveries in a fabulous setting.
