As shopping centres go this one is not the classiest I’ve visited. Yet it holds everything you need and is a great centre for locals. Northfield Shopping Centre holds a variety for customers ensuring cheap prices in many of the shops. There are some big chains around as well as some of the small stores that ensure a great opportunity to ‘mouch’ if you have the time. Northfield has recently had a lot of infrastructural changes and is looking far more pleasing on the eye.

Northfield isn’t home to the most swankiest of shopping centres, but it is a great place to go for locals and visitors alike, who are wanting to explore more unique shops. But don’t get me wrong, the centre still boasts a large collection of big stores such as Poundland, WHSmith and Iceland, which are all greatly needed for the Northfield locals. It means that they don’t have to travel elsewhere for their necessities. The overall aesthetics of Northfield’s precinct are very outdated and generic, however, the actual shops themselves are varied when compared to the usual shopping centres of Brum. It’s the independent shops that make the centre different, and there’s a great collection of clothes stores for all ages and genders, from the men’s shop Little Italy, to the girl’s clothes accessories shop Miss Bizybody. I was quite surprised at the actual size of the centre, and expected it to be much smaller for the area(considering that there’s quite a few shops on the Bristol Road outside as it is.) The centre is a great find, and is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area.

I was going to write a rather snippy review of Northfield Shopping Centre — which I still call ‘The Grovesnor’ but their website is such a lovely thing — all fathers day competitions and pleas to local community groups that I had a proper think about it and decided that actually this is rather a splendid place. Okay, its not The Mailbox — but then these days even The Mailbox has lost some of its sheen and boasts a lot of empty shops and a windswept feel that always reminds me of a J G Ballard novel — but for cheap stuff it’s pretty unbeatable. As well as a lot of independent stores(see other reviews), a magnificent Wilkinsons, a load of stalls selling bargain priced, glitzy bags, SIM cards etc and a regular newsletter(with money off vouchers) it also boats a vibrating chair — like the ones you get in airports. I’ve never seen anyone use it but like the shopping centre itself I’m very glad it exists.

I’m a great fan of the shopping centre as it’s on my doorstep and, although the stores might not be massive, the 50 shops(including many high street chains) are ideal for my everyday needs. There are a number of clothes shops including Peacocks(loving their Pearl Lowe dresses!), Select, Bön Marche, New Look, Dorothy Perkins as well as some bargain shops. The centre’s also home to Poundland & Bodycare for more bargains; WHSmith and Rymans for stationery; card shops and a perfume shop for special occasions; a butchers and greengrocers for fresh food; and Greggs and Firkins for a well-earned pit stop. Not forgetting homeware stores, shoe shops, mobile phone shops, a bank, Thomas Cook travel agent and Superdrug… there’s even a pet shop, brow bar and cobblers! Iceland’s always very popular(thanks to its home delivery service that saves you from having to lug your bags home), as is Wilkinsons, and both stay open until 6pm Monday to Saturday. This is a local shopping centre, at the heart of Northfield, with over 600 car parking spaces. There are also bus stops outside, with buses to nearby areas such as Weoley Castle, Longbridge, Bartley Green, Bournville and Kings Norton as well as other parts of Northfield. It used to be called the Grosvenor Shopping Centre but changed its name to Northfield Shopping Centre in 2005, although locally many people still call it ‘The Grosvenor’.

Ok this is not the best shopping centre in the world or the most exclusive, but I like it due to all the cheap bargains you can get here! For me it is not the best place to go clothes shopping but it is great for Poundland, Superdrug, Peacocks, Iceland, WH Smith amongst many more. They also have clean toilets which is more than some shopping centres have. It was recently been refurbished also.
