Parkside Wine Stores could not be further from your typical modern day off licence, it bears no resemblance at all to the horrors of Bargain Booze. This is a business which is very much in the past and thank God for that! It is a small family run store which has limited opening hours but a surprisingly wide range of stock. Wines, spirits, ales and beers can all be acquired and you won’t break the bank in the process. As well as that they offer a selection of sweets such as liquorice which further enhances the sense that this is a business proudly sticking by traditional values. The people who run Parkside are very friendly and if there’s something they don’t have then they usually acquire it by your next visit, all of which amounts to fantastic customer service. I sincerely hope that Parkside sticks to its guns and doesn’t change because the people of Selly Oak love it just the way it is.

There’s something about Parkside that makes it a bit special in terms of local Off Licences. Perhaps it’s the location, tucked in amongst residential properties or it’s tightly packed interior and wide selection of ales, but Parkside certainly isn’t your average drinks purveyor. It has to be tried once for the novelty factor and the friendly and knowledgeble service provided may well see you return to visit this little gem again. I found there to be a great selection of ales and didn’t go home empty handed.

I love this place for the fact that they have simply refused to move with the times and don’t compete with the ‘Open All Hours’ mentality of a lot of shops. They open for a couple of hours around midday and then allow themselves the luxury of a distinctly continental long afternoon off. After that they often don’t open until 6pm and will be closed by 10pm. Inside the shop it’s a little like stepping back in time to the shops of my childhood — and I suspect that, rather like the opening hours, the shop itself probably hasn’t changed much in 30-odd years. The prices are reasonably competitive for a small off-license and the service is friendly. The stock offers a fairly decent selection of wines, beers and spirits. If you are in Selly Park, or passing, it’s worth nipping in to have a look at what is very much a dying breed of shop.
