EDIT: I’m knocking them back a star because I’ve had a couple of less than satisfactory food experiences since the original review. Last straw was ordering Scampi and finding them all undercooked inside. I just left them. This is really basic stuff that I’d expect any commercial food outlet to get right and be disciplined about. Testing food temperature is a basic of food hygiene. It’s a shame. The Jewellers has an obvious old style feel out and in and is all the better for it. You don’t get many non-locals, trendies, kids, hipsters here; they tend to gravitate exclusively to the misc ‘cool approved’ bars of the Quarter! I go in pretty much weekly for a classic pub lunch. It’s only busy of a Friday lunchtime food wise so seats are no problem. Service is brisk and fuss-free, prices are super-keen and quality good. You get plenty on your plate that’s for sure. Lots of folks know each other in here as it’s a real local pub, but it’s not at all exclusive. I used to get looks of curiosity and now I’m ignored and accepted. Plenty of workers from around and about, a few older couples having a lunch ‘outing’, and some bar hangers passing the time of day. It’s friendly and low key. No loud music racket to create a false hype, no one pushing or in your face at the bar. Some would call it an ‘old mans pub’ and as an ‘old man’ myself I’d rate it above many more popular lunch-time venues in the Jewellery Quarter. Grab a paper, sit in our out, enjoy the home style scoff and chill … nice!

Real old pub in the JQ. Seen the place a few times but never had the opportunity to call in, as I was in the area with some free time I jumped at the chance to try it. Its easy to see how people may feel a little intimidated by the regulars sat outside. I’m not easily intimidated(former cop now interviews serial killers for a living) so strolled on inside. This is a real old fashioned pub, and its nice to see its still obviously doing well and that they haven’t been tempted to make the place a trendy hang out. Through the front door you have a choice of left or right, right takes you into a small room with a pool table, right takes you into the lounge. One side is lined with bench seats along the wall with tables and chairs, then there is a wall which runs about two thirds the length of the room. The other side of the wall is where you order food. They were not serving food the day I visited but the neon star shaped cards advertised Lasagne and Shepherds Pie, both less than £5. I had a pint of Carling and was charged £3.60 by the friendly and chatty bar maid. She new all the other customers by their first names and there was a real feel of a friendly local pub. I didn’t feel at all unwelcome in there and will definately go back.

As i’m sure many people already have, I’ve walked past The Jewellers Arms on countless occasions, but never before had I walked in. For a mid-week afternoon, I thought it seemed considerably busy for a pub, but that contributed itself towards the overall atmosphere. The sun was shining, for a moment or two anyway, so we sat outside, in what wasn’t the nicest beer garden in the city, but the benches outside certainly did a job. Located minutes away from Jewellery quarter train station, it only takes a train journey and a small walk to reach. A fairly old fashioned pub, the prices were reasonable and the whole environment being particularly welcome. If you’re in the area I would recommend popping in for one, two, or however many your plan on having.

This pub has called to me ever since I started working in the JQ but for no real reason I can pinpoint, I’d always walk past it and head to somewhere else like the Lord Clifden or the RVT. Thanks to the sun, we decided to change that — buying halves of delicious cold bitter and sitting on their benches out in the sun. It always attracts a load of local business people at lunchtime and at the end of the day. They serve food, quite a limited range but they DO cater for vegetarians(albeit via lasagne which has dirty cheese!) and they’re dog friendly, which is handy as everyone in the JQ seems to have dogs nowadays! It even has a function room upstairs — though I didn’t venture up, so have no idea about condition of said room. All in all, I’ll definitely be back for an after work drink or two.

After working a few metres away from this place for 2 years now I’ve only just made it inside the place. From the outside it has an old-world charm that makes you want to drink here but can also keep you away when you see the regulars drinking at the tables outside, somehow looking intimidating when they’re not. I haven’t eaten here before but have often admired the many plates of food i’ve spotted. It’s standard pub sandwich, chips type affairs with a chicken curry and a chilli on today as well. The place is spotless yet aged in a really good, old faithful friend kind of way. With an irishman behind the bar and bar stool lurkers giving the banter it’s a great place for people watching. They welcome dogs here and have a function room upstairs as well as a decent sized lounge. It’s a great little spot with Victorian stained glass windows that can be added into your Jewellery Quarter pub crawl.
