I’d give them 0 stars if i could. There is no sign anywhere saying kids aren’t allowed in without paying for a meal. We already ordered our drinks, paid for them, i was about to take them to the table when a staff member(probably a manager) ran up to the bar to tell me we couldn’t stay unless we bought meals, because we had kids with us. I told them to keep their drinks, got the money back and left. Good job wasting the drinks, the pub lost money on that move due to their own greediness. Definitely not going back there.

There is a reason this place always has a line out the door. The pies are cooked to delicious perfection. Weekends are nearly impossible to get a table, especially during the Christmas Market. Go on a weekday afternoon for prompt and friendly service. We ordered the vegetarian pie with mashed potatoes and peas and kale. This dish is served with a delightful mushroom gravy for drizzling over the whole dish. The vegetables in the pie are clearly fresh and not from a bag of frozen peas, corn and carrots. I love the dark, moody décor. The walls are dark grey, while all the decorations are gold, black and white. The tables are cosy, but I’m not a fan of the lumpy barstools, so avoid those if you can.

One of Brums older victorian pubs which used to be a bit of a dive. Now a Nicolsons pub with the usual leather seating and dark wood. Good range of real ale at a good price for the city centre. Pub food at a good price. Very handy for city centre and New Street station. Service good.

Decent prices, but a little but too touristy for my taste. Then again it’s a pub in the centre, just steps from the Bullring mall and shops, so it makes no pretense of being a little neighborhood place either. Too crowded and busy for a regular hangout but fun to visit.

My first time in this pub — it was the first stop when I got off the train after a brilliant concert at the LG Arena. The best way to end the night was with a nightcap! On entering the pub at 23.30 that night there were a few people in still but the bar staff were clearing up. We ordered our brandy’s and ciders and found a seat by the window. it was like stepping back in time. All the old fixtures and fittings, lovely old pictures on the wall. This is a Nicholson’s pub who have a great reputation up and down the country for their food and keeping part of history in the pubs. The Old Contemptibles off Livery St is a classic. I know on a saturday day this pub gets pretty busy but I do plan to go again

A quick drink in the Shakespeare and I was ready to go to the town hall for a talk from a renowned British Mountaineer. Original décor, with a theme of black and gold gives this place an authentic, classy quality to it. Full of city slickers and not so slick people at around 6pm all escaping the demanding day’s work. It had a warm atmosphere and the food looked damn good too coming down the shaft behind the bar and revealing itself, all steaming and enticing. I didn’t have the luxury of tucking in as I had to make a move after two pints of Guiness. My impression of The Shakespeare — a warm pub to nestle yourself away in with a pint, and escape from wild commuter and consumer frenzy that relentlessly goes on and on outside.

A great little pub near to Birmingham’s New Street train station. A traditional feel with some of it’s old décor still in tact, this is a nice watering hole in our city centre. I sat down with a Kopparberg whilst waiting for friends. The idea was to meet for the pub quiz,(which is every Wednesday at 8pm), but we all missed that so just had some drinks. They have typical selections as you would find in any other pub, with traditional pub food. I’ve not yet tried the food, but I have only ever been in here for drinks. The stools at the small tables can be quite small, so try and get yourself a proper table if you can. You’ll find the pub is heaving after 5pm with many local workers grabbing a cheeky pint and if your sitting outside, it can get a bit loud. But, to be honest, it’s just as busy on the weekends. The staff in here are always friendly, but you do sometimes have to wait a while, they are always rushed off their feet.

It always feels to me like you have to hunt down real ale in Birmingham, so The Shakespeare is always worth a stop on any Brummy-based pub tour or crawl. Located just off the high street and close to New Street station, it’s still tucked away somewhat down Lower Temple Street which means(depending what time of day it is) it’s not always bustling and, on a sunny day, you may even be lucky enough to grab a table outside and do a wee bit of people-watching. A step up from Wetherspoons thanks to the character provided by its Victorian features, it still offers reasonable prices and a series of familiar guest ales. The menu isn’t awe-inspiring but, if you merely want some yummy pub grub, there’s nothing to be churlish about here. I’ve washed my burger and chips down with a pint a few times here and never had anything to complain about. The perfect location too if you want to have a break during shopping; last Christmas, it offered the perfect sanctuary during a particularly gruelling trek through the German market.

First time in this pub. The pub is a little on the small side. Good selection of comfie seats at one end and a dining area at the other. Should have been four ales on but only two when i went in. Gunpowder mild and Doombar

Right next to New street Station, this is the one for the road pub on the way to the last train. Cheap wine though £5 a bottle has made it appear on my night out earlier on as well! Food is average pub food but I mean acceptable
