I always thought this was another crappy chain pubs but after having dinner in Bodega opposite me and my friend fancied a quick drink for the road. Sun on the hill has a great atmosphere, but its let down by the staff. They don’t appear particularly friendly or welcoming. Feels a bit like they are doing you a favour really. Clientele on this Thursday evening was predominantly male in groups of 3s and 4s. However its very reasonably priced as well. I’ve enjoyed many roast dinners here on a Sunday, and the burgers are also half decent. You can’t fault it for value, especially if you’ve got an Independent Birmingham card and get 25% off!

I’ve been to the Sun on the Hill many times over the years. My most recent visit was a week ago. The venue feels somewhat upgraded with high tables and high chairs but it still feels to me very much like TV rules the venue. If I want tv I’ll watch it at home. The staff are friendly and the food is excellent. It’s like a post-student venue with a cool and trendy crowd.

A good looking pub/bar that is very much gear for food. The high ceilings make the place look very grown up and add a good look and feel. That have a good range of cast beers and all your other favourite. It is still one of them places that has the rule about you have to spend a minimum of 5 pound on a card but will give you the change if it’s under 5? The menu is quick and easy for but is still good. I think the beer is some of the best I have ever had and they have got a number I have never heard of. I think this place would be at its best on a Friday or a weekend but still good in the week.

This place used to be my haunt a few years ago, me and a friend were hopelessly in love with two of the barstaff and so we were constantly in there. Now my lust filled days are over, I can give an objective view of the place. The food is really good, especially the burgers and onion rings(my favourite) and the style of the place is very cool. I like that they have tvs that occasionally show films and I have to admit that sometimes I have been distracted from conversations by the film. It gets really crowded and the prices are a little steep but overall I really like the place.

I really like the Sun on the Hill, I always forget about the place and I don’t know why. There is always a good atmosphere, the beer on offer is excellent. The place is nice and tidy for the type of pub it is and its nice and central too. Yesterday myself and my wife went for a Sunday lunch and this was the only place we could find really at the time of day we were looking. We weren’t hoping for much at the price of £7.95(with independent card about £6) but we were really impressed. This is actually a really nice Sunday Roast and one that I would come back for as well. I’ve had burgers here previously and personally I dont think it was much to write home about but the food normally is definitely not bad at all, its better than the wetherspoons which is next door. If you are looking for a decent no-nonsense pub in the centre of Birmingham where you can watch football or have a dance at the weekend or just generally have a mid week drink, then the Sun on the Hill is ideal.

I thought I had already reviewed this place, but it seems not! Anyway I spent too many Friday nights during college in this building, then known as the Factotum, cheap shots and pints coupled with terrible cheesy music, was the order of the day, taking over the upstairs balcony! Thankfully, both the pub, and my choice of weekend activities, have been through changes over the years. The(now called) Sun on The Hill is a strange pub, its had a nice lick of paint and theyve certainly tried to hipster the place up a bit, they also have Purity on draft, which is a solid reliable pint, in addition to a reasonable range of bottled beer and draft lagers. But they also show most sporting events, on big screens and a projector, which although I’m a sports fan, doesn’t seem to sit with the general look aim of the place as a cool city centre pub. Now obviously theses days no pub could survive without a busy kitchen, and the sun on the hill has a pretty extensive menu serving sandwiches, light bites, burgers and hot dogs. I’ve seen a pretty wide range of the offerings here, and I have one recommendation. Have the hot dog. Its by far the best item on the menu and although not up there with Big Dog( RIP for now…) its a pretty damn good dawg, and there’s a few different options to pick between too. The other food is ok, nothing more nothings less, the dog is where its at yo.

Ordered food here, manager was a pleb. They screwed up our order, then when I complained I was refunded and told never to come back, in a very aggresive manner.

I only have fond memories about previous visits to «The Sun On The Hill», but it’s just not one of those places I visit very regularly. During a catch up over cocktails with Elite Adam S last night, he mentioned that this venue had received a bit of a makeover recently. As it was just over the road from Bodega(the chosen Cocktail venue for the evening), we decided to pay the cheque and wander on over to check it out. First thing to note, it’s not that different. You’re not going to wander in and be astonished in a «changing rooms» stylee, but it does look smarter. I love the renewed signage on the door and the little design touches in this smart City pub. It’s been a while since I had visited, but I did notice that they seemed to have more cask ale on offer than I remembered them having. I went for a pint of «New World» whilst Adam had a glass of the olé faithful«Mad Goose»(with Purity being a fairly local brewery an’ all). I do love the mixed seating here. We sat on a table with high stools, but there were comfy booths in the main bar, a sofa area near the door, bar stools and further tables up a level on the mezzanine. It would make a great venue as a «pre-club» stop, a drink with friends, a casual date or even just a swift afterwork pint! Now, I didn’t try the food here but I noticed the menu has been updated(as per The Sun At The Station — ). They are also offering a «Half Price Food On Mondays» offer until the end of October, so I will try and pop in and catch that to give a more round review of the venue. This is a smart city pub, with a bit of a «younger» and«funkier» feel to it than many of it’s nearest neighbours. It plays a good selection of music and has a welcoming and friendly vibe. If you haven’t popped in before, make a date to grab a pint with a friend and check out this cool venue.

I also used to think this place was a Wetherspoon’s, never actually knowing that it is a lovely little gem situated in between the shopping and business districts. It doesn’t attract a crowd of behemoths like some would expect, it attracts the trendy/hip crowd you find with these kinds of venues in Brum, the entrepreneur, the idealist, the dreamer(and the occasional rainmaker). It has DJ’s and live local bands at weekends, it has local ales on tap, it has a lovely atmosphere and what’s better is that it’s just had a lovely lick of nice oceanic blue paint! Certainly stopping by this place again. :)

Came in here to watch rugby, had an amazing pulled pork topped beef burger and was generally impressed by the menu which had been revamped since my previous visit. Seating was at a premium as usual but the atmosphere was decent and the big screen means you’re never struggling to see.

Not bad and always quick to serve with not very bad toilets. I like most of the music. Better than other pubs in the area.

Best atmosphere in town! I’m going to be honest with you and admit I am slightly biased in my review here, I DJ here monthly and have done so since it first opened. It’s been really rewarding to watch it grow and change from a pretty quiet rough pub into a cool destination for everyone from young hipsters, rockers, football fans, break dancers, the after work crowd, students and everyone in-between. There really is nowhere else in town where all these people can mix together happily. Obviously I think the music is awesome as it’s often me playing it(!), but all of the DJs have their own twist on a general policy of indie, soul, funk, disco, punk etc. etc. basically crowd-pleasing alternative music. You won’t hear chart plop like One Direction but you also won’t hear anything too abrasive like hard house, death metal or heavy drum n bass. The drinks are reasonably priced, they do basic pub food which is decent enough although not high-end menu this place is more about the atmosphere, the beer and the music. Big screens mean it’s a favourite during football season. The attractive bar staff may also be a factor…

With its high ceilings, The Sun On the Hill is a very aesthetically pleasing pub, one that I have visited on countless occasions. Located opposite Bodega, my friends and I have often headed over to the Sun after having a bite to eat. Showing all the football games on the weekend, we have often decided to head down to the pub and chosen this particular hangout. With beers reasonably priced and a wide selection of pub grub, The Sun on the Hill is a favourite of ours, thanks to its simplicity and general warmness. It may not be the best pub in the surrounding area but it certainly does a job, plus they do say, it’s not where you are it’s who you’re with and The Sun On the Hill is certainly adequate enough for us!

Situated next to Trenchers on Bennett’s Hill, this is a nice lovely city pub. I ordered myself a cider and sat near the large windows — perfect place to people watch whilst waiting for some of my mates. They have local magazines available for you to read and a loud Television blarring out all the local news, which then switched over to the footy. It does get a bit noisy though and has a mixed crowd with city people and young working professionals mixing after work. Although I thought this isn’t a bad pub, it wasn’t my cup of tea. But if your after a nice hangout, drinks with mates or want to relax with a drink and watch the telly, this pub ticks all of those boxes. It’s also not too far from New Street station and the public transport with a local TAXI rank close by, incase you’ve had a few too many, getting home isn’t much of a problem.

When I go to a pub I want to be able to eat tasty food, or at least ogle menus in the hope that I’ll come back to eat tasty food.(I like eating. It’s clearly a theme!) So The Sun on the Hill disappoints me. Yes, the beer is good, and the high ceilings are aesthetically pleasing(as are the Chesterfield sofas and vintage wallpapers) and the staff are perfectly friendly and it’s all absolutely ok — but the menu is a massive letdown. As a vegetarian who doesn’t eat cheese, there is NOTHING on their menu for me. I could have chips. Or possibly soup, if they have a veggie soup on. I could have their veggie burger — but as it’s just a grilled mushroom covered in cheese, what I’d end up with is a mushroom between two bits of bread. Yawn. I now only come here as a stop before heading off elsewhere — like Bodega across the street for food and cocktails.

It’s a big pub, with plenty of room for you and your mates, from sofa spaces to big booths. The drinks are reasonably priced and with a big screen the place is often busy for football matches and generally on an evening. I haven’t eaten here in a while but its standard pub food and its just across the way from Bodega if you fancy something more exciting. If you want something more relaxed than the hipster vibe of The Victoria but with a good friendly atmosphere then you can’t go wrong. The upstairs mezzanine level always feels a bit quieter than the big open downstairs seating area but the stairs can often be treacherous with drinks being carried up and down them. Even when it’s busy with a bit of hustle and bustle you don’t mind too much as it feels really relaxed and easy going.

The Sun On The Hill has come a long way in the six years since I used to work there. Previously known as simply ‘The Hill’, The Sun recently re-opened following a change in management and a £250,000 refurbishment. Gone are the days where the place was in open competition with the Wetherspoons next door. Now, the middle-of-the-road trad-pub image has been replaced with an altogether more stylish set-up. The music policy has changed along with the management, and they now seem to be reaching out for the largely uncatered-for mature indie crowd. There is plenty of seating available, including big comfy leather armchairs in the mezzanine bar upstairs. They serve food, which consists of fairly typical pub fare although it is largely home-made. The chips, in particular, were impressively huge and tasty. I had a gigantic doorstop of a sandwich which was overflowing with filling and tasted great. The onion rings were nothing special, but you can’t have everything. I asked the lady who served me(who I took to be the manager) whether they’d be bringing back the old pub’s regular karaōke evenings. She responded that it was under consideration, although they are trying to add a new spin to the format by getting a live band to perform the songs instead of a karaōke machine. Interesting concept, and one that I will be paying attention to should it come about. The Hill also has regular DJs on several nights of the week, including members of local heroes Chicks Dig Jerks. This place has got a great atmosphere and deserves to do really well for itself. There certainly isn’t anything of a similar size in the area that caters for the same kind of crowd. I will undoubtedly be going back there very soon indeed.

The Hill is one of my favourite pubs in Birmingham. I love the big open space inside the pub and there is always room to sit down. The food is not great so I don’t recommend eating here but its a great place to have a cold beer in the heart of Birmingham. I have seen DJ’s in here before from local nightclubs so they probably know what they are doing by drinking in there. Prices are what you would expect to pay in birmingham. If you like watching sport at the pub theres quick a few screens dotted around and there is also a pool table.

The Hill is one of a few proper pubs left in the city centre. Granted, its not glamourous like most bars in the city and they don’t do any fancy cocktails. but its got as great atmosphere, you can always go n have a laugh on a Friday night to probably the only place in the city that does karaōke! Also all of the decent boxing matches and football games are always on. Recomended a visit.

The Hill provides much needed change from the Wetherspoons next door. Unfortunately, given such a good opportunity to be different, it doesn’t take full advantage. Though drinks prices aren’t as dirt cheap as the ‘spoons next door, you do get the privilege of music to drink and chat to, as well as HD screens on which to watch the latest payperviews. A cool feature in this pub is the mezzanine, with comfy seating all along, overlooking the rest of the pub, and the street outside. Can be hired out if you fancy a party up there with mates. Only annoying experiences in this pub is with the food. Price is fine, but they often don’t have the full compliment of dishes as stated on their menu, and if you are a veggie like me, you can sometimes be left struggling to get your first or even second choice of dish…
