A wonderful pub in Bishop’s Stortford, it’s a proper old pub with centuries of history and a great feature is how it’s separated into different rooms on different levels. The staff were very welcoming and we found a number of real ales on, although I don’t recall seeing any craft beers. There’s an outside courtyard and apparently a large room at the back with a stage where they host live music. The walls are decorated with various old paintings, and there’s a fire place in one part of the pub. It’s easily a place where I could see whiling away an afternoon or evening in a very traditional setting! They weren’t serving food when we were there which was a little surprising given it was a Saturday evening, but someone said they were doing food at lunchtime. Although, with a food hygiene rating of 2 out of 5 according to the Scores on the Doors website you may not want to eat here anyway. Hopefully I will make it back at some point to enjoy the pub some more! Possibly skipping the food though…

Nice boozer, with an almost labyrinth layout. the other reviews have this place spot on, my only comment would be that since the smoking ban, the ‘problem’ with the loo’s has become more apparent. This in no way detracts from the charm of the place, particularly if you’re out with some mates, but if you’re taking your other half out, just forewarn them before they take a trip to the WC. The best pub in town by a long shot.

Lovely friendly boozer with varied guest ales, nice outdoor tables, and excellent blues nights out the back. And no yobs!

Real ales, friendly regulars, and varied events. This medieval couching inn, with gorgeous remaining columns and beams, wonky floors, and really charming period details, is a real treasure. Renowned for it’s wide selection of real-ales and bitters, which attract a happy and relaxed crowd of all ages(though there are a few beardy old men ale-drinkers, and the atmosphere is all the better for them) this isn’t the sort of pub full of dressed up dolly birds and Burton’s men, but instead has a lovely low key feel. The long room at the back hosts all manner of local events, from a bi-weekly Blues club, to a fun acoustic night, and in the low bar a regular and informal folk/acoustic session is pretty welcoming too. Great beer garden and courtyard in the summer, all in all a lovely old pub.
