I find it just too expensive for the quality of food provided. After moving to Glasgow, I can get a much better Indian meal for half the price.

So, the wife and I started to look around for a local curry source for Sunday nights. Shimla came highly recommended but everyone talked about the higher price. I thought it would be roughly the price of Mother India and hopefully would be similar quality. I ordered and we were there in five minutes. Street parking was impossible due to three new Land Rovers outside, So, we pulled into the lot in the back. We were flanked by another four large Chelsea Tractors in the parking lot. I nicked in to collect our dinner. The old firm match crowd had the takeout area jumping. The guy asked my name and he presented me with the total. Twice as much as Mother India! I was a little taken back. I was also resolved that this food was going to be subjected to a much higher standard for review. Momma Mumtaz should be blown away by this meal. Got home and some of the higher prices become evident. Portions were much larger. We normally get two rices, one would have sufficed. The poppadums were larger and a quid a piece(that was a fiver blown). Also the Nan was really large, I did not need the extra chapati. So, a more reasonable order may have saved us quite a bit. My main was the Chicken Tikka Bhoona(in which they added Chilli to the title on the menu), it was too hot for me. But I could see a lot hot curry fans loving this dish. The wife’s Aloo Saag was lovely but both mains were smaller than other places and twice the price. I think with more judicious ordering we could get the cost down to a Mother India takeaway. However, don’t kid yourself. The lack of MI butter chicken is something I will severely regret. Smokey buttery goodness, but having a curry you don’t need to put into a thermos bag and travel an hour total driving time to obtain. There is something to be said for local. So, Shimla will do. It has some interesting things on the menu. Supposedly one of the owners travelled back to the old country and returned with new and interesting dishes. I may pay the 13 quid to see what the hell he came back with. I also now know who owns all of the Landrovers parked outside the restaurant. The Arabic letters in the back windscreens should have given it away, but the prices here made it sink in.

Shimla Cottage is my favorite India restaurant in the Glasgow area. I have never actually sat and had a meal in the restaurant but I have ordered food to take-away many times. It is more expensive than your average Indian place but in my opinion you definitely get what you pay for and the food is worth the few extra quid. I usually order a chicken
