Bert’s is straddling a lot of conflicting ideas masterfully. Vintage style store aesthetic with modern household items. High end items sold at an affordable price. Small intimate stores with plenty of stock. Stock that changes over frequently but you can still return later to buy something that caught your eye. They sell all the basics for the kitchen, garden and home but most products have a special twist and they do special occassions beautifully in that store. You always leave with something that feels like a bargain but will really enhance your home. For gift, berts has something for everyone and my family and I generally use christmas day as Bert’s stuff day as it’s perfect at that time of year!

I love this store, lots of old fashioned style stuff with a homemade style touch. Be sure to pop in on Easter or Christmas they always have quirky little decorations and bits and pieces!

Bert’s Homestore elegantly combines kitsch with the functional. All their staff appear to have been picked by merit of comeliness and all seem to be as happy in their work as they would be, say, practicing the fine art of home baking. Their stock is all primarily for indoor use with a fascinating selection of kitchen wares that maintain a certain 1950s air but are in fact in the main totally new ideas. As for the rest of their stock I think it’s safe to say they put the fun into functional. I can’t say I would ever really use this place to completely kit out my kitchen or home simply because I think it will be a good while before I can afford to, though Bert’s makes for the perfect emporium of gift ideas especially for a friend who has just moved house.

Sells much of the same stuff as Steamer Trading, only cheaper! Perfect for kitchenalia addicts. I should know, I have about 4 sillicon balloon whisks, 3 pastry brushes, a spring-loaded potato masher and a dedicated spaghetti measurer but I recently realised I don’t own a wooden spoon. It’s a disease.

This Bert’s location is smaller, but still packed with household delights. A big sale table displays leftover Christmas stock and random gift ideas for reduced prices. Plants, decorations, plain dishware and the lesser-used household gadgets. Since I’ve been working on my new years resolution to cook more creatively, I’ve discovered garlic is yummy, but stinky business. I mean, it smells good in the pan, but not lingering on my hands. Apparently, this is a common concern, as I noticed garlic presses, garlic choppers, garlic cards and garlic storage containers all conveniently set up together. The card was the cheapest at £3. The shop really has everything you could need whilst cooking or baking or cleaning or organising your kitchen. Or bathroom, actually. A domestic catch-all.

This is a trendy little shop selling everything you need(and a lot you don’t) for your home. While I try not to shop at supermarkets if I can, the one thing I think is worth buying from them is kitchenware as its so much more expensive in shops like this. I just wouldn’t pay £14.95 for a fold away colander. Why have a fold away colander? That said, they do sell a really good range of kitchen knives here at good prices and that’s one thing you should spend a but of money on.

I know it’s a little early but my Christmas wish-list would include the following: Cherry blossom lights Pillar box red whistling kettle Three-tier cake stand Two cowboy mugs Joseph Joseph Mixing bowls Stove-top coffee pot Silicone hot mitts Chocolate Christmas cake hand-delivered by Nigella Lawson You can buy the first seven from Bert’s Homestore. The last wish might be a bit more tricky…

This is the Hove original of the Bert’s Homestore chain(there’s now one in Brighton too), located in the pleasantly pedestrianised shopping area of George Street.(George Street is small but reasonably quiet, even on a Saturday — it’s the complete opposite of Brighton city centre.) They sell lots of stuff for kitchens and bathrooms, concentrating on accessesories such as knives, chopping boards, tea-strainers, tea-pots, mug tress, washing up bowls in funky designs, etc. rather on standard crockery and cutlery(although there are a few basic items). It’s attractively laid out and lovely to browse, and excellent for things such as olive spoons, tea-bag squeezers, lemon rind peelers, which in my book are not essentials, but make those specific tasks so much easier. The staff are lovely too. It’s hard to leave without buying something
