This is a great place to grab some carbs if you’re ravenous after surfing the twenty foot monster that is the Hot Pipe! Actually it’s more likely to be a ripple but less said the better as some Brighton surfers are convinced this is where it’s at. I’ve got three words — Devon and Cornwall. Carat’s has had a bit of a bit of brush with the pretty stick — there are chrome chairs and tables, posh coffees, nice photos on the wall and more importantly a nice view of the sea complemented by a varied menu of snacks and full meals. the breakfasts are terrific.

Carats describes its self as «Porslade’s best kept secret». I would be inclined to disagree with than in favour of saying it’s Portslades best secret. While the building and surroundings may leave a little to be desired the café its self is a very pleasant experience. With a veranda style seating area outside for summer dining and a clean lined, gimmick free café within this place is the ideal stop off for a week day breakfast or lunch. I popped in this morning after a long grey walk along the harbour wall and had simple beans on toast with a big mug of coffee. An order so simple would be hard to get wrong to be fair but all the same the whole experience was flawless. The Staff is friendly and all the food is priced at what it’s worth rather than where it is. They take cards for transactions of over five pounds, there are cycle racks if you fancy the ride down there and parking couldn’t be closer at hand if it were a drive through.

Situated on the beach in a not so popular area it is difficult to see why Carats Café is sooo popular. It does so well because the food is top notch as far as greasy spoons go and with on site, easy parking many people go here before a round of golf or before other activities. The service is always efficient and you are never left waiting long. The last time I went in there I met 3 people I knew which made me realise that it must be kept open by those well known locals who would rather drive an extra 5 minutes for quality rather than settle for mediocrity nearby.
