£10 for a puncture repair is a bit steep but the guy was friendly and checked out my brakes for free. Will be going there again as it’s local.

A teeny tiny little shop packed to bursting point with exceptional quality bikes from town and hybrids to mountain bikes, most of which priced out of reach for me and my humble budget. The tantalising window display showcases some of the best in stock, with the popular Brompton foldaway bikes stealing the main stage. Popular and convenient as they are, they’re not easy on the bank balance so be prepared if you’re looking to get one. Freedom Bikes offers services and repairs as well as frames and custom made bikes, and although these items are on the very highest end of the price spectrum, the quality is second to none. Run by a bunch of enthusiasts who know what they’re talking about, if you’ve saved a good wad of cash and want a good quality bike you can rely on, this is the place. That’s if you can get in the shop, of course, as space isn’t exactly in abundance.

Brighton seems to be an ever more cycle hungry city. So much so that at least two of the bigger bully boy cycle retail chains have moved in and been quite successful in the last two years. There are however a selection of firmly rooted independents in Brighton who are well worth visiting and supporting. Freedom Bikes definitely in that selection. Unlike many of the smaller specialist based independents they haven’t given in to the ease of just stocking Specialized. Freedom Bikes seem to be mainly based around Norco, a brand synonymous with big heavy duty downhill bikes. But that hasn’t restricted Freedom bikes to this one specialist niche corner of cycling. As you enter this small shop in Kemp town one of the first things that strikes you is that they seem to have bikes literally hanging from the walls and ceiling. They have in this stock a good wide selection too, incorporating hybrids, cross country bikes and of course some of the more heavy weight machines. I didn’t notice many road bikes on my last trip but it goes without saying that if there’s something you want, they can get it in. Another pleasant feature of this shop is that, as with many of these smaller stores, the workshop is open. So from the customer’s side of the counter you can see what they get up to when they repair your beloved two wheeled friend. I always feel that this indicated that they have nothing to hide.

I bought my mountain bike from here about 3 years ago second hand for an absolute snip of a price. Its still going strong and on the off chance something breaks or goes wrong(usually with the gears) I take it back in for a bit of repair and TLC(again, really cheap). They still offer a lot of 2nd hand bikes and bargains as well as a huge range of brand new ones. The staff are really helpful and always happy to have a chat about any good trails nearby. Great place to get you started on the biking scene!

The guys in Freedom Bikes are a great combination of knowledge, chilled out and helpful. I’ve used them a few times: to order some top-end new wheels in, to swap some parts over from one frame to another, and to buy a high visibility jacket for commuting on. I feel like they offer good reasonable prices and provide the right advice. Although the shop is small, they have a surprising amount of stuff in stock. I haven’t bought a bike from them(yet) but having had their help on existing bikes, I definitely would consider them next time round.
