Massey were responsible for letting me my second year university house. Moving off campus in to town is a big moment in any undergrad’s life and I think in retrospect it’s fair to say that Massey were not really the ideal people to walk me through the process! They were friendly enough people, but they didn’t seem especially competent. For a start, every single person I dealt with couldn’t have been much older than me. Whilst age(or a lack of) doesn’t necessarily connote incompetency, I did get the feeling that they were all just having a bit of a laugh. The letting agent that we dealt with was a young man of about 22, who sped around in his little Ka with the radio on full blast. He seemed more interested in flirting than providing useful information. As with all letting agents, Massey charged us extortionate fees for a nonexistent service. When we complained about the bizarre smell in the house when we moved in, they brushed us off. When we complained of a serious damp problem, they told us to open our windows, despite freezing temperatures outside. I’m not suggesting that this makes them unique as a letting agent, but it does make dealing with them a little infuriating. At the end of our tenancy, half of out deposits were retained for ‘cleaning’, despite the fact that we had rigorously cleaned the entire house. ANNOYING!
