This is a kooky small pub tucked away down Baker street. It’s certainly the kind of place that attracts few students or folks that aren’t regular features. That being said, I have always been made to feel very welcome and part of the gathering on my visits. It’s a good value venue also and you can get a lot of drinks for under the current £2.50 — £3 mark. They serve great bloody Mary’s and go that little bit further with the celery and seasoning. It’s also part of the Harvey’s consortium so you are guaranteed to get a number of cheeky ales on tap. The pub has the overall feel of the late 50’s or early 60’s, but for the working man’s enjoyment of the period, rather than any mod’s or rockers or hippies. If you want to try out somewhere in the city without pretentious clientele, décor or staff then you will certainly get a taste of Brighton before it became trendy in the Mitre. And I certainly mean that as a compliment.

Representing the local Lewes based brewers Harveys, Mitre Tavern is a classic locals pub that tends to have a consistent crowd, mainly of middle aged men. If you are a beer or ale connoisseur then this pub, like many Harveys pubs, could for you. Harveys is on the better brewers, the pub offers a wide range from range that Harveys produce. If you’re relatively young, I wouldn’t recommend the Mitre Tavern because it’s the type of place where you can easily feel a little out of place. That said, the customers are quiet and don’t take much notice of you, making it OK for a quiet drink.

Mitre Tavern is an old school Harveys pub, which carries a couple of additional beverages alongside the standard, Sussex brewed Harveys. I bought myself a serving of Mild Harveys, and it danced in the tongue delightfully… It makes me wonder why they don’t just sell this as the standard… Still, each to their own. Its been on the quiet side when I’ve been here, but it makes it ideal for enjoying a quiet book. Its also handsomely cheap to get a nice pint, making it ideal for a pub crawl through town. So far as the extras of pubs are concerned, you won’t be finding much to excite here… There’s not much of a smoking area, or anything in the way of outdoor seating, and while comfortably sized, its by no means huge inside. Its more about the high quality beer on offer. That said, don’t be perterbed if you’re not a Harveys fan, as there’s still a collection of standard beers and the full accompaniment of wines and spirits to quench your thirst with.

The Mitre is a small, quiet, traditional pub on Baker Street, just off the London Road. The area gets a bad press by people who think Brighton is all about trendiness and newness. London Road, with its cheap cafes, charity shops and old-school pubs just doesn’t fit that bill. That’s why I like it. The Mitre is generally full of solo drinking men, and it does certainly have the feel of a ‘locals pub’. But, it’s not unfriendly despite that, and it feels like the kind of place that has been reassuringly the same for years. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here, but there’s still something about this place I like.

Small little local pub. I wouldn’t recommend it but they do nice ale.

This is a scary local pub with lots of ale and old men. It is small and has nice surroundings but I wouldn’t recommend it for a night out. Unless you like ale.

This small corner pub, just off the London Road shopping area in Brighton, is a real, down-to-earth local. The décor is a bit like a traditional front lounge — stripey wallpaper, dado rail, potted plants and prints on the wall, including some unusual ones from the Twentieth Century Society, showing the classic 20th century classic architecture in Brighton. There’s a small TV in one corner for sports addicts(Sky Sports), but it doesn’t intrude on the rest of the pub. Tied to the local Harvey’s brewery, it serves Sussex Best Bitter, Harvey’s Mild and Armada, all decently kept.(Sussex Best is one of my favourite pints and comes strongly recommended). Service is friendly, but they don’t do food — there are some good chippies and pie shops nearby, though. It’s nice for a quiet pint on a week-day evening, but gets busier at week-ends, with mostly older locals.
