Hard to find and a long uphill journey… Totally worth it! One of my favourite spots for Sunday roast. The food is great and they offer exotic roasts which you don’t find in many pubs. The service is good and the pub is really nice-one of the places I miss the most since moving back to London.

If you can find a way to climb the Everest like Southover Street, then you will be generously rewarded with a brilliant pub fit to rival many in Brighton. Situated in the lively student area of Hanover, the ‘Pub with no name’ is a typically Brighton pub with its wooden furnishings and relaxed atmosphere. However, what sets it apart is the Sunday food menu; for those just looking for a well cooked, homemade Roast, then the ‘Pub with no name’ will certainly not disappoint. But where the pub really comes in to its own is with its stunning range of choices. In my visits, I have sampled springbok, venison and alligator. With easily over twenty Sunday lunches available, including a selection of tempting vegetarian dishes, the ‘Pub with no name’ is a must for any indecisive pub goer. I’d recommend arriving early to avoid the painstaking process of searching for a table, something I know all to well.

So the mystery has now been long solved, the less than elusive pub with no name can be found sitting pretty on the top of Southover Street, and what’s more it does have a name… A Place To Eat and Drink… or something forgettable like that. Hence the mysterious name change. Anyway, if you do manage to find it, they do great Sunday Roasts(recently voted best in town by SOURCE) with some interesting options. Ostrich being a decent alternative to the regular meat options. Sundays are also pretty good for live football, if it’s a big match though the seating quickly becomes limited.

The-Pub-With-No-Name… wooooooooo… how mysterious and freaky. I wonder if we’re going to get served by a man with no name and enjoy some food from a confusingly blank menu! Stupid stupid name for a pub. After that outburst, I must admit the place is actually really nice and had a really warm atmosphere. The staff were really friendly if a little slow to serve and the food was great(try the gammon — spot on). Hanover, or Muesli Mountain as its also known does have some of the best pubs in Brighton and this one certainly comes into that category. They also have a space upstairs for parties and local artists to show their work off. Other plus points are the music policy; lots of soul and jazz which is just right when your eating dinner but a minus point(from my point of view) is that kids are allowed in there until 9.30pm. Good news if your a parent, bad news if you swear a lot and can’t stand noisy kids!

This pub needs to be good, given the trek up Southover Street it takes to get here, and the stiff competition offered by the many other pubs in this area. It is worth the walk though. It looks quite unassuming from the outside, but the interior is a nice combination of stylish and cosy, and it’s usually quite busy. There is a cute little bar as you enter with a reasonable amount of seating stretching back. The food is good here too, especially the Sunday roasts. Upstairs is room that can be reserved for groups.

Is it or is it not clever to call your pub ‘Pub With No Name’ and not have a sign announcing this name? I mean obviously the idea is that its quirky and subversive, and possibly a little bit elite–«We don’t need a name, we reject the phenomenon of naming establishments!». Is that what they’re thinking, or was it more that they couldn’t come up with a name and so decided to wittily and explicitly announce the fact? I’m not sure, but either way, I find it a little irksome. The pub itself though is really lovely! And for that reason I’ll be giving four stars, despite my grievances with the name. The pub’s interior is warm and welcoming. It’s located in the ground floor of a converted house and the original features(high ceilings, bay windows) and layout of the place, create real character. They manage to strike a fine balance between traditional pub and more of a contemporary lounge bar. The place is comfortable and just the right size, with big wooden tables and cosy fairy lights. Sunday night often sees me and my friends in this pub– it has the perfect atmosphere for a bit of lazy hair-of-the-dog drinking, whilst chatting or playing a good old game of scrabble!

One of my favourite pubs in Brighton. Always a friendly crowd, which is generally the case with Hanover. They show football, but without being a ‘sports’ pub predominantly. This is a real favourite place of mine to eat though. It’s a mostly Mexican menu, and everything I’ve tried has been excellent. My personal favourite by some distance though, are the home made burgers, which are excellent. Only downside for me, is that it gets very busy on a Sunday afternoon, as people clamber for the Sunday roasts.
