This branch of the franchise Spar has been in business on Lewes Road for nearly thirty years, so it must be doing something right. Useful selection of items and goodies but it is quite difficult to park around here. Definitely the best of the small shops on this part of the otherwise dowdy Lewes Road.

Placed a bit too close to the big Sainsbury on Lewis road to compete on a serious«weekly shop» level of service, the Spar is a bit of a rip off in my eyes… Milk especially is priced substantially higher than in the big ‘un up the road, preciesly because they know that people aren’t going to walk an extra 5 minutes there and back or pay for a bus pass just to grab some essential perishables. Its infuriating really, as it just feels like Spar is sapping money away from the small, independent stores it neighbours, and not even providing the benefit of decent prices to its consumers. Ah well, rant over… There are some nice fresh baked foods on offer which are recommendable, and I have always found the people on the tills to be pleasant and smiley, so that’s a pair of pluses.

The Spar on the Lewes Road is a bit nasty really isn’t it. It’s not exactly nice, it’s not really that cheap either, but the staff are mostly a good bunch so that helps. The positives of The Spar though are undoubtedly that it has a good range of freshly baked goods which outdo its main competitor, the Co-Op just across the road. My flatmate who is a fiend for pain-au-raisin would religiously go to this place to pick up the tasty little delights that were still warm in the mornings and if it’s anything to go by he looked a happy little bunny as he devoured them like a mythical beast. Other than the Pain-au-raisin though, there was not much that really kept me going back, except maybe some quite cheap natural yoghurt. The range of products is quite limited, and I remember being pretty surprised to be turned away because they didn’t stock Pesto. Come on people, everyone needs Pesto, don’t they?

Spar offers a selection of snacks, convenience items, food products and alcohol. Personally, I don’t think it is quite as good as the Co-Op situated across the road, but it certainly possesses some positives. Most notably, a good selection of beverages — alcoholic and otherwise-, and value for money. The prices of all items, as you’d expect with a Spar, are very cheap. Certainly a good place for students or individuals with light wallets.
