Tortilla is like any build your own burrito sort of place. Long story short, it’s whatever. I mean, it served a purpose. We were hungry, we saw Tortilla, went«ooh, burrito… who doesn’t love a burrito?», order burrito, eat burrito, leave full. They did have nachos which for some reason they don’t serve till 3pm, but they totally let us order them at 2:45. It had queso on it! Which my little Texan heart got pretty excited about, but the queso was nothing like the stuff back home, and a little grainy. If you’re hungry and want a simple meal which is vaguely mexican but will definitely fill you up on the cheap, Tortilla is aight.

Compared to other Mexican places in Brighton, Tortilla doesn’t really have much. The food was okay, but it’s so busy in there, it is just like a fast food joint for Mexican, and the love just isn’t really there. You can get a salad bowl if you want to skip the carbs, but avoid the onions and peppers, as these are cooked in a lot of oil, and were quite greasy. I had the chicken, that was again, okay, but nothing compared to chicken at my three other favourite Mexican places in Brighton. What a shame!

I’ve been here several times and have been holding off on my review, waiting for that one time where my opinions change dramatically about this place. Sadly, this time has never come. The food in here really is distinctly meh. Nothing to blow anyone’s socks off, I’d vouch. It’s fine. It’s average! But who wants fine and average when they’re dining out? I can cook fine and average very well at home, thanks! Firstly, let me just say that in terms of speedy, relatively cheap food(£5 for a ‘medium’(massive) burrito) this place is a-ok. It’s quick service and easy to take away or sit-in with. So, if that’s what you’re after, then by all means stop on by. However, if you’re after great Mexican food, this place is likely to disappoint. The system is simple. You pick your dish and the servers build it for you right then and there. A Mexican subway, if you will. The staff are pleasant enough and quick about their work, so no real complaints there. Everything I’ve tried from here has been rather bland. The meat is tasteless, be it the pork, the chicken or even the beef that costs more to add in. It’s a little on the dry side and lacks that juicy, flavoured quality a good burrito has. I added guacamole(extra cost again, as per usual in these joints) and even the spiciest salsa and still, the tastes were underwhelming, to say the least. Even the tortilla wraps(their very namesake!!) are a little too gooey for my liking! I don’t rate this place and, despite it’s temptingly close proximity to my flat, I think I have finally given up hope on it. There are too many decent Mexican places around that, for little extra cost, will offer much tastier and more flavoursome food!

I tried this place today, as I was in a hurry and there wasn’t much of a wait. having lived in California, ok, well, it’s hard to measure up to an authentic taqueria, despite the founders of this UK chain being ex-Californians. But I was happy to try it; more on par with Chipotle in the States, as the menu has just a few options, the staff make it before you as you stand in line, and what you see is what you get. I had the chicken burrito with guacamole and medium-hot sauce, no cheese, cilantro rice, and onions. it was wrapped in foil, I inhaled it at a table, and was done and gone in a few minutes. it was just what I wanted. will try it again bit with a hotter sauce & jalapeños next time, as I agree with the previous review that it was slightly bland but I was still happy with it.

There seems to be a trend for opening up Mexican restaurants in Brighton at the moment. One minute we had none, now we have a few. Unfortunately, this one at least lives up to the reputation that Mexican restaurants in the UK have gained — poor. It’s a fast food restaurant. You order at the counter, they make your dish, and you grab a seat where you can. The choice is burrito, naked burrito or tacos. We both went for burritos — myself the pork and my partner the beef. You choose your rice(tomato or coriander), beans or pepper, sauce is either hot, medium or mild, then you can add cheese, sour cream, jalapeños, and avocado(for an additional cost). Drinks include soft drinks, a selection of beers or margaritas. We went for a Modelo which was an unusual and pleasant beer, for which they get an extra star. Unfortunately, the food was pretty tasteless. The meat was unrecognisable and the sauces(we both went for medium) were bland. There was additional chilli sauce on the table which even I had to use and I’m not usually a chilli fan. The staff were friendly but the place itself had the grubby feel reminiscent of other fast food joints. There was also only one ladies toilet which I thought was strange for a place of this size. It’s always good to try out a new restaurant, but on this occasion, we will not be returning.
