Arf and Ales? Don’t know about you, but I’m stumped. With a name like this, however, it’s clear that this café was designed for the working man. Serving specials such as cottage pie with three veg and chips(only working man’s cafes count their veg) for around £4 and smoked haddock, mash and two mushy peas(okay, I was kidding that time) for a similar price, it’s a wonder Arf and Ales hasn’t sprouted feet and legged it across to East Street to join its meat and four veg companions. However, this café is definitely in a league of its own on North Street and can revel in its individuality when compared to the area’s more upper crust cafes such as Green Bean. If you’re looking for a no frills mug of builders tea, a hearty slab of meat accompanied by a large dollop of potato and an old fashioned helping of gravy. Well… you know where it’s at.
