There’s a term my friends and I use to describe a certain type of people: Sloanes. And that word, should you know what I mean, is how you can sum up this shop. Overpriced standard clothes — they can get away with charging near enough £100 for a pair of jeans, just because they’re Joules. I don’t suppose my impression was helped by the fact their mens section is only a couple of rails of clothes. There’s a few garish rugby T-shirts with some unpleasant Joules designs, some stripped shirts of the Jack Wills variety, and some pairs of jeans. The staff are friendly enough, but the clientele and prices just don’t work for me.

Having a secret soft spot for floral fifties design, a line dresses and retro fashions I thought I would absolutely love Joules. From the outside I was immediately struck by the pink and yellow flowers illuminating the shop from the coldness of Apple and Kurt Geiger. But that’s where the magic starts and finishes for me. After a look around the quite highly-priced dresses, skirts, scarves and cardigans I was left with the overwhelming impression that this would be Anthea Turner’s favourite shop. Perfect for yummy mummy’s and their yummy husband and children, many of whom seem to be in the shop on the two occasions I’ve been in. There’s no doubting the craftsmanship of the clothes they stock, it’s all just a bit prim and proper for a scruffy girl like me.
