Ate here last night based on the Unilocal rating. The presentation was a bit of a let down compared to my expectations but it all tasted good.

Dined here with two others in mid-April 2013. Don’t be put off by the small entranceway, which leads down to the restaurant. It’s not a big place, but rather cosy. Service was prompt and efficient and we were soon attacking a plate of warm, crisp poppadoms. They came with the traditional spice tray, which was very tasty, especially the lime pickle. I chose the chicken jalfrezi for my main and it was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. Perfectly spiced, plenty of meat and generously sized. My two companions also commented on how much they had enjoyed their choices. The bill was reasonable at around £50 for three. Thoroughly recommended.

I eat a fair amount of Indian food and have always gone back to Joy Raj over the past 8 years. Extensive menu(try the fish bhuna… seriously) and friendly service, decent prices, free delivery if you order a certain amount or discount for takeaway, oh and the food is excellent!

I really liked it here — and they did let me wander around their kitchen:

Joyraj in Clifton Village is a cosy little Indian restaurant, and exactly what you might expect from a curry house. The waiters are really friendly and helpful, the food is delicious, if a little heavy and the décor is almost stylish. The basement dining area is lovely to relax in on a cold night, and you’ll loose track of the time, enjoying poppadoms curries and naans. My personal favourite is the chef’s special Hunza, which is a curry infused with orange zest, delicious!

Obviously, dining in Clifton will set you back typically more than elsewhere, mainly through reputation and the nature of the area, but I really want to recommend the Joy Raj. Though set in the basement, making it pretty difficult for disabled and injured curry seekers to get down there, I rather like privacy of the location, away from the hustle and bustle of the busy road outside and the Tesco that sits opposite. A meal will typically set you back just over a tenner each if you choose to share a naan and a rice and have a pint whilst you’re at it! It’s a good place for groups, and the staff are very friendy indeed. The food is delicious and the flavours are distinguishable, rather than some of the studently takeaway curry places you can find elswhere in the city. If you do find yourself in the area, try it out!

A bit worried reading another comment here, but obviously they have improved since then. Significantly, that is. IMO, the best Indian in Clifton Village. Foods cooked with care. Owner himself is always in and all staff are very helpful. I suggest asking lots of questions to find out. Fish Jalfrezi and Chapati are very nice.

This place used to do excellent food, but I don’t know what happened… it got to the point when the paneer in the paneer korma tasted sour/off, and the food got greasy and not so tasty. Such a dissapointment. I hope they get better again.
