If you haven’t been to source then I suggest you stop what you are doing immediately and get down there. The delicatessen is pricey but amazing, freshly made cakes, savoury delights, cheese, meats and other deli treats. Everything is delicious! Then move on to the restaurant/café that has an amazing breakfast and lunch/dinner menu that changes daily! Today we couldn’t choose between Squash and Stilton arancini and spiced aubergine, cous cous with cauliflower fritters so ended up getting both and sharing! This was followed by an amazing blackberry and apple cake with thick vanilla cream. I’ve eaten here on many occasions and the food is always fresh, extremely tasty and of top quality!

I’m lucky enough to be based in an office round the corner from Source. If ever I’m taking a client(or anyone else for that matter) out for a lunch or a coffee I always head to Source. Top quality ingredients and they really care about the food. It’s seventh heaven for foodies too with a food hall selling the best quality local ingredients. Happy to recommend it to anyone.

I quote Duncan Iraci, food expert and Bristolian Superstar, ‘The best breakfast in town, full stop.’ And he should know, he usually has two breakfasts. I’m pretty sure he’s down there most mornings, say hi for me. But they make the black pudding themselves; they even make their own baked beans!!! I don’t like baked beans and neither does Duncan but we eat them here. You have to try them to believe them. The sausages and bacon are locally sourced from just down the road, literally, the piggy you saw from your train window on the way into town that morning, will be waiting for you at Taste. Really terms like ‘locally sourced’, ‘freshly sourced’ and ‘local produce’ are fast becoming clichés, but it really is the truth here. Easily some of the best food in the city and as I have mentioned, try the breakfasts!!! Or Duncan will eat you.

A smaller deli shop in the centre of town from the big sister out near the airport. My main reason for venturing in here was for the advertisement of squirrel meat. Maybe I’ve been spending too much time with my dog… I didn’t go for it I’m afraid to report, I will try to be braver next time. With variety and quality this place ain’t cheap despite its market location but definitely worth heading for. With a few other stalls in St Nicks offering veg and meat, I’m thinking now you can do a quality food shop here now in one place and finally get a knife into that evil Tesco store at the top of Wine Street.

With its slightly avant-garde name I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Taste. To my pleasant surprise it turned out to be a high-end restaurant with an intriguing deli-style shop attached. I’ll start with the shop first. The intention of the owners has been to bring the ingredients that the best chefs use and sell them to the general public. This means lots of the very best local meat, limes from Italy, and other delights you thought only existed on restaurant menus. A word of warning to the squeamish; they’re not afraid of showing their top quality meat off and that means various beasts hanging from hooks. The restaurant takes a similar approach. Things are oriented around whatever the best ingredients that are available. The menu isn’t printed — they just chalk up whatever they’ve got. There’s a very limited selection available to drink and no waiter service, this place really is just about the food. Some exquisite flavours, go here to satisfy your luxury food urges.

As I wandered lonely as a lonely thing in amongst the market stalls and jolly bric-à-brac of St. Nicholas I found a light and airy new deli, a Taste deli nonetheless — the same as they have in Barrow Gurney. My stomach rumbled on approach — glass cabinets filled with ham hock, plump olives and the crumbliest of goat’s cheese and tomato pastries. With a French influence, they have fairtrade chocolat, wholesome vins, locally made fromage and still-warm pain from the oven. Oo-la-la!
