For an independent coffee house on the main pedestrianised area of Burnley, it does a pretty good job. Its opposite a large Costa but does seem to have its own repetitive customer base, which is easy to see why. The environment is friendly and cosy. There is a large selection of cakes, coffees and even light meals inc today there was 4 choices of soup! Price wise for coffee its average, with a reasonably prices toasted T-cake with Jam for £1.65. The girl on the till taking ordered a little quiet, petite and mouse like, which to be honest for such a coffee shop needs someone with more vigour and personality, think of the Starbucks staff who generally cant do enough for you… Thats whats needed here! Oh yes, ask for a loyalty card… After 9 coffees your next is free!

Rhode Island Coffee appears to be very popular in Burnley town centre. The main reason for this is that there doesn’t seem to be anything better! An excellent range of teas and coffees and a range of cakes such as chocolate cake and scones with jam & butter. I decided to try one of the scones, as they looked home made and seemed quite good value. Theres a few comfortable seats but most of the seating us quite hard and unforgiving. They have wifi available through a service which you need to sign up to which was too much of a faff to be bothered. A bit of redecoration & updating wouldn’t go amiss, especially externally. I would go again if I happen to be in Burnley town centre, but only because theres nothing better.

Serves Coffees teas and lattes with a selection of cake, sanwiches and paninis. A great meeting place and always busy with wannabe Burnley wags.

Rhode Island is a coffee shop in Burnley that was perhaps the first to try and raise the bar when it came to cafés in Burnley town centre. For a town that was used to greasy spoons and the drab and dull shopping centre café, Rhode Island offers a sleek and modern setting with a wide assortment of freshly brewed coffees, teas, lattes, hot chocolates and all the sort of frappé mocha offerings you’d expect from a café that clearly takes its inspiration from Starbucks and similar chains. Unfortunately, Rhode Island appears to have also taken its price structure from Starbucks and for a small town like Burnley, the cost of having a coffee and sandwich in Rhode Island is somewhat extortionate. But despite this, it seems to attract people in large numbers and is usually heaving with shoppers enjoying a brew and a relaxer. This means the queues can be long and I’ve even walked out before as there were no tables available and the café was heaving. On quieter occasions when I have stopped in, the coffee is fantastic and the food is certainly tasty but I think it’s a little on the expensive side for an albeit posh, self-serve café.
