As pubs have progressed over the last couple of decades, so have ‘B&B’s, not a few of which are virtually ‘mini-hotels’, but finding them is not always so easy. There are plenty of directories online, but I prefer to see a website! We were attending a function in Chepstow, which turned out to be pretty full(a lot of walkers go there to enjoy the Wye Valley and take part in organised walks). Having abandoned the possibility of accommodation in Chepstow itself, some kind soul recommended this establishment in Caldicot, just a few miles down the road. It is very comfortably-appointed and there is a separate entrance for guests, so that you do not need to worry about rousing the house at an advanced hour. Rooms include digital TV, a DVD player, WiFi, radio alarm and beverages and the bathroom is stocked with toiletries. It has a beautiful garden at the back(picture) although that is of course private. It is also conveniently situated next door to the church, opposite an excellent pub and just a couple of minutes away from Caldicot Castle, which is worth seeing. The town centre is not far away. Glynis and Gordon — the couple who run it — could not have been be more charming and have taken trouble to provide useful literature about the area in all rooms. On their website, the breakfast is mentioned and there is indeed a breakfast menu which is not always par for the course. The breakfast was also substantially above par for the course, with fresh and tasty local produce. If you are visiting that part of the country, I can certainly recommend it. One of best B&Bs I have stayed in.
