Yes, the Cambridge Café Rouge is part of a chain, and so the menu is fixed and rather unchanging. But the atmosphere is very warm and full of character, the service welcoming and nicely attentive. The cooking is certainly French, not grand but genuine and tasty, good coffee(of course). Sometimes a little crowded but that’s part of the feel of the place; also not cheap, but the prices are quite acceptable. A good place to re-visit, with company, from time to time.

I spent a week roaming the streets of Cambridge and came across a trio of French restaurants one afternoon. I vowed to find my way back for dinner and was so glad I did. An avid lover of French food, I was directed to try Cote(one of the three) by the concierge at our hotel. I headed back that evening planning to have dinner at Cote. While it looked sleek and modern it lacked the warmth and charm that Café Rouge next door had. Add to the fact that there were hardly any diners there, we opted for Café Rouge. Instantly I knew the right choice was made. Cozy with a true French vibe, I was transported to a little bistro in the Latin Quarter. We were seated immediately and it seems the key is to get there a little early as it became very full later on. I ordered a Liver Terrine to start and the Champingon de Paris. Both were amazing. The terrine was light like a Mousse Pâté. While I was devouring it I commented it was the best thing I had had in my mouth the entire trip. The Champignons were in a rich cheesy sauce. Every bit sopped up with a crusty baguette. We ordered a Salmon Croque and Spinach and Mushroom Pasta for our entrees. They were both completely wonderful. Café Rouge offers several options of prix fixe menu. One for early dining 12−5pm and 5pm until close. Both were very reasonably priced and given the quality of food it was an outstanding deal. My only regret was that we happened upon Café Rouge during the end of our stay. I surely would have been there every day had I found them sooner.

Delicious and rich French food. Service was good considering the place was packed! Great steaks and yummy desserts! The décor in the place makes you feel like you are sitting in a little bistro in France!

We had a good meal here recently. The restaurant was full, unfortunately they rarely open up the upstairs dining room, so everyone ges crammed into the small shop window dining room and it’s not nice sitting close to other people when you’re having a rare meal out for two without the kids. The food was pretty good, we had marinated olives and grilled goats milk cheese, followed by sea bass. I do have to say, that it’s not authentic french food, but it’s not a bad try. The waitress was very charming and efficient. Far better than some of the other ‘tourist trap’ restaurants nearby.

Expensive, as is all French food. But the staff is friendly(or, at least as friendly as you can get by British standards) and the food is quality. The desserts are amazing, particularly the chocolate cakes. I love the Salad de merguez. Yum. Service is slow, but I love the restaurant and its general coziness. They don’t do take-away though… which is lame.

Very nice lunchtime food — I just wish they had more space in their courtyard for the summer months. Great atmosphere.

Café Rouge on Bridge Street is situated on a very busy street, and if you go for breakfast you will often find yourself looking out the window at a lorry which is delivery supplies to the restaurant next door. Poor views aside, Café Rouge is a lovely, well-throughout chain restaurant. The walls have little murals on, giving it the feel of a privately owned café, rather than a large chain. The staff are mainly all attentive, although I have had a few experiences there where I felt service was a little lacking. I would very strongly recommend Café Rouge for breakfast. The pasty basket to share is excellent value, and fills you up well, whilst not breaking the bank. On the main menu, the steak is a must have, and keep an eye open for the daily specials. In the summer, there is a ‘secret courtyard’ out the back where you can enjoy a meal in the sunshine(although if you have your heart set on this it is worth booking, as it is quite small and gets full quickly). The food is always well-cooked, and the service attentive. It can get a little warm in the summer, and to compensate they open the shutters onto the road — which means it gets quite noisy. However, it does make you feel like you are in a Parisian café!

I love Café Rouge, it’s so beautifully French and welcoming, with wonderful food and sumptuous, artistic décor. They’ve really succeeded in making it an eyecatching and intricate venue, the shop front looks so inviting and inside it’s even better.

Despite being a chain, Café Rouge has great French food, and a cosy atmosphere. The restaurant is located on two floors, and all the waiters are French. There is also a little patio where you can eat during the summer. The food is all very good, but I wouldn’t recommend the mussels unless they tell you they’re fresh.
