What a let down. An invitation to a special birthday celebration afternoon tea at Hotel Felix has been on display for a few weeks now on my mantelpiece and my excitement has been building. What a treat! The reality was so disappointing. Firstly nothing was ready… just a few tables lined up along the side of the room. We were told thats where we should sit and then a waitress clumsily distributed cups and saucers, plates and cutlery. There were a few bemused faces in our party of 19, after all this event had been booked weeks ago. Still we all kept talking and creating a celebratory atmosphere. Then came a cold drink, a blackcurrant cordial apparently but although it was a cheerful pink colour, it was completely tasteless. This was followed by luke warm coffee, stewed tea and dried sandwiches. For a hotel that sells itself on high standard this was a really poor effort. Surely someone somewhere should be taking notice of 19 unhappy customers.

I was booked at a different hotel but my coworkers canceled my other hotel and booked me here instead. My company has a rate here so I can’t comment on what the actual rate is. For me it was reasonable. The room was great. Nice big bed and spacious room. Internet connect was ok but pricy. I did not have a car and showed up late so ate in the restaurant on location. You are a good walk or taxi ride away from anything else so if you don’t have a car you probably will end up eating at this restaurant. The local office for the company I work for has their Christmas party here and everyone seems to like it. The restaurant on location which is called Graffiti, I thought was good. I also did not get small potions and went with the special of the day which included a salad with prosciutto on it that I really liked. The bar is 5 feet away has a different menu and not that interesting. My second night stay I ordered from this menu and this was a small portion.

Poor facilities(no gym on-site) and a pretentious, over-priced restaurant serving minute portions of poorly prepared(but well presented) food. I had the Suffolk Lamb, but it was over-cooked and fairly bland — not good for a minute portion costing over 20GBP(before sides — it doesn’t include any vegtables to speak of). Internet access is extra — something which is not made clear on their web site. The wired and wireless access is provided by different companies, so you pay twice if you have to switch between them. My premier king room was 175GBP a night. The room and bathroom were good sizes. The bathroom was lacking the quality of fittings that I would expect at this level — cheap tiles, bodged silicone sealant and a broken shower tap. My room also got a moderate amount of noise from the A14(I did request a quiet room). The staff were friendly, but overall, it’s very expensive and not really up to the standard of some(better located) chain hotels.

Really nice food. It’s all good stuff and not at completely ridiculous prices which is nice. You don’t get under-sized portions and leave the restaurant in need of more either. The decour is always looking great — I love the art the have on the walls, and the staff are friendly and efficient. My only complaint? Everything has dairy in it and this is not always made clear in the menu. I don’t ask for an ingredients list, but if you’re going to add a sauce to your dish please say so so I can decide if it’s good for me or not.
