it’s hard to find a traditional English tea shop these days but this one is the real thing. Their menu is quite diverse though – you don’t have to have the classic afternoon tea of scones, cream and jam. They offer dozens of different teas(from tins which line the wall) so you should be able to find something there you like. Of course they also serve other drinks, for example the excellent«cloudy» lemonade(more similar to American lemonade than English). Don’t be put off by the apparently tiny eating area that you see as you enter. They have an extensive upstairs and even a garden if the weather is good.

Excellent tea selection, good cream tea, crumpets, and a Cornish pasty in a lovely old building made for a splendid afternoon tea.

This place is quite cute, housed in a 500+ year old building with creaky floors, exposed wooden beams, the works. I got here a little on the late side for cream tea(about 4:30) so the place was empty but service was still friendly — my hobbling old lady waitress was a dead ringer for Downton Abbey’s Mrs. Padmore — and nobody rushed me out. Got to sit in the second floor — er, I mean first story — which allowed for a modest view of the shopping street. The waitress loaned me a binder with a rather exhaustive history of the building. Very funny! Small but clean toilets upstairs, fair prices, and the cream tea was just right. Good soft scones and fresh clotted cream, even for late in the day. I missed out on Tiny Tim’s, the more famous tearoom in Canterbury, because that one is closed Mondays. But I certainly did not regret my respite at the Moat. Note: I am not 100% sure, but I believe it is still cash only.

A cute little tea room that I came across during a day trip to Canterbury! I really wanted to go Tiny Tim’s tearoom after walking around a bit more. But when we passed by the building front — it was in an old historic residential building. The door handle and ceilings were set so low, that when you walked it, it feels like you stepped into a hobbit’s house :) When you pass by the front window, they have a selection of baked goods in front: cakes, croissants, little tarts, scones, etc. We were seated upstairs, and I everything seemed crooked and slant to the right. Not on purpose, but just how the place was built. very cool :) I ordered the Classic Traditional Tea, £5.95 — a pot of tea and 2 scones(plain and raisin), with clotted cream and jam. Delicious! My friend ordered the special cream tea, £8.95 — a pot of tea with a tiered tray filled with 4 triangle cucumber sandwiches, 2 scones, and a big slice of a cake of your choice — he chose Victorian cream cake. I had a bite of the Victorian cream, I’m not huge on sweets and thought it was too much on the sugary side. But I think my friend seemed to like it! I usually stick with Earl Grey, and I thought it was fantastic. I find that other places seem to be really mild with the flavor, but this was nice and robust. Loved it! Though we also wanted to try Tiny Tim, but we were there on a Sunday, so everything closed early :( BTW — its cash only!

I discovered and tried The Moat Tea Rooms when I went to Canterbury last month What a nice and lovely place ! The service was very excellent(the elderly waitress is absolutely charming and well-meaning); teas and cakes were well presented. I tasted a chocolate cupcake and(if I remember well) a berries/soft fruits tea which delighted my taste-buds ! Moreover, the building is unusual(but pleasant) with its sloping floors, red walls and old-fashioned drinking room. And Good Gracious, look at these wonderful and colored pastries ! ( ) Photo link: In a nutshell: PERFECT !

British Tea Guild, Afternoon Tea? recommended, so we tried it, and were not disappointed. Roadworks outside couldn’t ruin it for us. We loved it, reminds us of the Tea rooms in Chain Lane in Newark, Excellent Service, Well Presented, Cream Teas were excellent, we purchased souvenirs, and took photos, it really does need to be on the Canterbury Tour leaflets if it isn’t already, the mouldings either side of the door, Gargoyles are worth noting also. A joy

A lovely old-fashioned tea room which is even open in the depths of winter. It offers special cream teas in an authentic medieval room, with sloping floors and ceilings. It also offers sandwiches, jacket potatoes and soup. The scones were huge and tasty and the Earl Grey tea delightful. Very olde-worlde.

Yes, I love the tearoom. Very charming and my image of tearoom! What a shame that chain coffee shop take over such a good part of English culture I like their pot of tea, strong and nice aroma flavour. Thier cream tea is so good and a bit portion. I like the red wallpaper too. so charming. It was build in 16 century so such a historical place. The staff is very nice, I said I like this place and he gave me a leaflet about thier shop. I think all my Japanese friends would love this place! I think they are successful if they have a branch in Japan!
