The guy who ran this kabab place is now in jail for heinous food violations. Would not recommend. Good service though.

I went off Kebabs a few years ago for some reason and I can’t for the life of me remember why. So it was a bit strange finding myself on city road one night after having watched some live music ordering a kebab in a kebab house on a road which had about thirty other different kebab houses. I was astounded the food looked gorgeous and tasted just as good as it looked. If you like kebabs and aren’t very fussy about where you eat my advice would be to just once check Adonis out as you may fall in love.

At the end of the day a kebab is a kebab is a kebab. All things considered Adonis make similar kebab too every other kebab house. Note how many kebab words I use. Any hoot this place has a clean kept shop with a nice appearance and the presentation of the food is good. I only ever have doner kebab so I’m a little biased but they do it well and i’m pleasantly surprised. As just another shop of this type along an awfully long road with many similar establishments there seems no reason to choose this one over any of the others.

Ahh, poor, tragic Adonis. In one aspect of the Adonis mythology, he was the lover of Aphrodite, revered above all other mortal men as worthy of her charms. He must have been something special. He was the tops. Unfortunately, the City Road takeaway that shares his name doesn’t quite managed to live up to the title. That’s not to say it’s a bad takeaway; on the contrary, it’s actually my second favourite kebab joint on a street absolutely jam-packed with kebab joints. The food is excellent there, and what’s more is it’s actually palatable when you’re sober; a rare and fantastic achievement for a kebab. It’s just that when you’re on a street with Aladdin’s, you have got to bring something special to the table, and anything short of having these kebabs served by Transformers or supermodels who are actually superheroes isn’t going to cut it, unfortunately. But if you’re looking for good food and the line for Aladdin’s is a little too long, by all means, come here for a great alternative.

Right next door to the equally hunger-satisfying Troy, as a takeaway it’s a tough call between Halal kebab joint Adonis and its close neighbour. Adonis probably just edges it on takeout content though, with Troy notching superior sit-down facilities. The sumptuous presentation of its kebabs is nearly enough to turn a vegetarian alone, putting to shame the majority of Cardiff outlets’ sorry excuses wrapped in pitta. And despite the fairly standard range, almost all the meals are so well executed even sober night owls can chow down without fearing the consequences. There’s a smoking area out back as well, although it’s designed more for sucking on Middle Eastern shisha water pipes than chain puffing your way through 20 Benson & Hedges.

Adonis Kebab House is the most curious name for this Halal kebab takeaway. I don’t possess a thorough knowledge of the Classics, but as far as I’m aware, Adonis is a Greek God that was revered for his beauty and physique,(a kind of Classical equivalent of today’s most adored movie stars, that tend to be legends in their own lifetimes), who was the love interest of Aphrodite, and died tragically way before his time. Adonis is essentially seen as sexy these days… which is hardly surprising considering his union with Aphrodite. So, the fact that this terrible proper Halal takeaway bares his name, makes my smile every time I see it! It’s fair to say that City Road is awash with kebab houses these days, all vying for diminishing business, but this is one of the better ones. Not only is it far superior in appearance than some, the quality of the food is streets ahead, placing it in the top bracket for the area… and that’s some achievement amid such fierce competition. They are certainly not the cheapest fast food outlet on City Road, but I believe that it is worth paying for quality. I recommend that you dig a little deeper in your pocket the next time you venture onto City Road for a takeout, and give Adonis Kebab House a try. You won’t be disappointed. They have recently extended the business to offer eating in as an option. The surroundings are pleasant enough, and the service is good. I recommend any of the lamb options, and the Kofta Kebab.
