Café Barons is almost stuck between a rock and a hard place. With Central Café and Coffee #1 within sneezing distance it’s got to fight hard for its business. Somewhat inevitably it’s locked in a price war with Central Café directly opposite. These two cafes are virtually indistinct from each other in terms of the kind of people they attract, but Café Central has the added advantage of offering outdoor seating and being more visible when this busy little thoroughfare is densely populated, which it often is. Large signs in the window attempt to narrow the gap, offering homemade specials that include the Credit Crunch Meal Deal, priced at an incredible £2.20 for sandwiches, can of pop, or tea /filter coffer if you prefer, and a piece of fruit or packet of crisps.(It seems that Café Baron are also competing with the supermarkets!) Paninis are just £2.00! That’s practically half the price of what they cost in the railway station! Café Baron has the edge when it comes to healthier hot food. Being an indoor establishment it is better placed to provide a broader selection of food. There’s soups of the day, at least one hot special, plus they do salad boxes as well.
