When you are beginning to realise your inability to eat and drink all the things you used to relish in life, which I must say, is a pretty horrid ‘pain in the rectum,’ you look around for alternatives. While Hungry Planet could probably still leave me feeling… eh…‘Pretty Hungry’ — having to stay away from Lactose, Fructose, Sucrose, Sorbitol, Gluten, Yeast, Alcohol, Sugar, Soy, along with all those other little HIDDEN ingredients that I won’t bore you with, but believe me, they are there… and now Coffee — I have to cheat sometimes — it leaves me pretty much in a jam! However, all things considered. While protein is high on the list of ‘To Eat,’ and although Hungry Planet has a few protein items… eh…nuts(meats and eggs are excluded as they are strictly Vegan) they do at least try to go beyond the call of duty in explaining the ingredients of all of their in house products and will get in anything that you request, which is pretty decent of them. A lovely little Gem of a place with polite and energetic staff who are very helpful. They do have quite a lot of sugar free and gluten free products so folk like me with food Allergies or Intolerances they do cater for in quite an abundance. Not the sort of little treasure that you’d expect to exist or be appreciated in this almost ‘mental wasteland’ of an environment — real ‘Gem in the Rough’ — In other words, it has to be a word of mouth place because one could definitely say, even after main street refurbishment, it is definitely on the ‘wrong side of the tracks.’

I’m always amazed when shops like this open in Clifton Street. Really happy but quite amazed. It’s exactly what Clifton Street needs but I always wonder if it will still be there in a few years time. I really hope so guys as this is a lovely shop. I wandered down for a look around a few weeks ago and was amazed at the selection of stuff. There’s also a lot of thought gone into the shop layout and exterior. I normally shop at The Spice of Life which is a bit quirky and haphazard and often with empty shelves which is a bit off putting. The fact this is a wholefood collective is a good sign too. When I visited they didn’t have what I wanted but was told they would order in anything I needed. It looks like it’s re-opened recently too after being taken over by the Collective after a shaky start. So fingers crossed. The only negative for me is they don’t do dairy or honey which is a pity. Price wise it was comparable with other wholefood shops.

The Hungry planet is positively a haven for vegetarians and vegans alike, it is stocked full of health foods and organic produce as well as serving as a café. There aren’t many places like this quirky little café and they do their best to make you feel wanted. When I went here, the furniture was all miss matched but this added to its charm. I opted for the veggie burger, though I’m not a veggie, it was a really great home made burger and enjoyed it a lot. I heard that this café was in trouble and has now been saved, which a lot of people seem happy about, so I urge you to give it a try, there is nowhere like it and you won’t be disappointed.

This health food shop and café is a shining star on Clifton Street, surrounded mainly by dodgy-looking greasy spoons and unhealthy take aways. It sells loads of Fair Trade products, plus just about everything you could need to stock up your cupboards with wholesome foods such as pulses, nuts, grains, and organic produce. They also have some wonderful cheeses, many of them Welsh, as well as other dairy products and fresh fruit and veg. For vegetarians and vegans, there’s a decent selection of chilled and other food available to eat in or take away — with the café serving up healthy and filling soups, pitta bread stuffed with hummus and salad, and other tasty fare and non-dairy coffees. The staff are great, and apparently use local suppliers when they can — plus I also heard that they get to and from work using public transport, which is commendable!
