I’m going to go against the grain here and say I really enjoy shopping at Lidl. I know it doesn’t have the same composed student clientele as the other one in town, but this store still offers a wide selection of low-price food and household items from a range of countries. And it’s closer to my house, so added points for that. My favourite part about shopping at Lidl is the chance to purchase my favourite German goodies, like lebkuchen and Nürnberger Bratwurst, for less than I’d pay for a drink at a Wetherspoons(As a kid, I spent three years in Germany, and the love of the cuisine have yet to leave me!). A friend of mine from France said she used to buy all of her wine from here, as Lidl carries quite a few home-grown varieties she couldn’t get at Tesco(and for much cheaper as well).

I wouldn’t even give this place one star unless I had too. Its not that I’m some sort of snob and hate Lidl’s, I actually like a lot of their stuff which is why I went in there. But really this shop is like a hell hole. You certainly see a lot of characters in there shall we say. One was being removed by the security man the last time I was in there! The check out staff, when they are actually on the checkout are just quite rude and dismissive. Yes if its the only option its better than nothing but thats about it.

Laughable as it may be, Lidl’s is a handy place for a man on his own and on a budget. Generally stocking non brand cheaper food from other countries, it can be conceived that they lack in quality. I would say that that’s true of under half of the food on offer here. The meat here is great, a lot of European spicy meat can be found here, as can lobsters and crabs if your feeling a little fancy. I normally cook spaghetti meatballs with a chopped bacon Bolognese, all for the measly sum of about £5. There’s also a great selection of wine here and without sounding like a wino, most of the stuff my lovely and I try there and is very reasonable in price. The only problem I really have of the store is that there’s only ever one checkout open and cause a long wait for no reason at all.

Lidl in Splott(Cardiff) is my most local supermarket. Other large supermarkets are easily accessible, there is an Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco all close by but they are a bit too far to walk. Other than Lidl, there is a small Tesco and a Co-op in walking distance. Lidl, is by far the best of the supermarkets in walking distance to me and in fact, I have found myself doing more and more of my main shop there. It is fantastic value and well stocked with most things you need for the week. This Lidl is great for vegetables. There is a large selection and they are a fraction of the price of most other supermarkets. They always have offers on so you can get things so cheap. At the moment, a bag of about 8 onions is 34p(£1.20 for 3 in Tesco) and a bag of bag spinach is 39p(£1.99 in Tesco) — unbelievable! Even without the offers the vegetables are much cheaper. There is a wide variety of frozen food ranging from meat to ready meals to puddings and there is a large dairy product section. You have to be selective in Lidl as some of the stuff is great but other things lack quality and are just cheap. There is a great range of tins and even a section for house hold items. Lidl has everything you need, unless you are looking for specific brands as most of Lidl’s stock is from abroad so you won’t recognise the names. it doesn’t take long though to work out what is good and what is not. I recommend Lidl if you’re on a budget. Even if you’re not and you like certain brands, it still makes good sense to get at least your fruit and vegetables at Lidl.

Large discount supermarket selling the usual range of food, they also have a range of specials that are products brought in on a week to week basis in a theme for example DIY where they sell a variety of tools and accessories at good prices. I try to do some of my supermarket shopping here as the prices are cheaper than Tescos although the range is much more limited and some products are not as good quality — they do not stock many vegetarian products like tofu, quorn or tvp but apparently they are good for fancy cheeses, meats and salamis. Lidl are still selling loaves of bread for 40p which is amongst the cheapest around in this credit crunch — I also recomment their museli which I actually prefer over more expensive brands.
