This little sandwich shop could be classed as sandwiched in the city, but more like hidden in the city. People don’t really go down this arcade, it took me two years to discover the cheap card shop that has saved all my cheap greeting card needs, that has been hidden down here. Sandwiched in the city however, always seems to be a little busy. I went here the other day at 11am, now this hour isn’t really breakfast and it’s not really lunch, but still it had a moderate queue. I ordered a fish finger baguette — my boyfriend tells me off for this because it is easily cooked at home, I don’t care, I love them. It took about 5 minutes to be made, but to be fair, it is fish fingers that need to be cooked. I loved my fish finger baguette, drenched in butter and crusty baguette goodness. I enjoyed thoroughly, though do beware, the prices here are not the cheapest, my baguette was £3.35 and this is one of the cheapest. You also have to pay more if you would like be distinguished and sit down while you eat. All in all, a nice little shop to visit for a lunchtime snack or even a breakfast, as they do a vast range.

Down one of Cardiff’s smallest arcades, Dominion’s, is a little café that claims to be Sandwiched In The City. Though I’m a massive fan of the name, I would say I’m only a mild fan of the place itself. I am quite partial to their chicken and bacon baguettes, however. The bacon’s done very much to my liking. This may be because it’s just bacon and I’m not a fussy person, but I think it’s also because the chicken and bacon sandwiches you might pick up in a supermarket or a Boots offer smaller chunks of more questionable meat. The only issue I have with this café is how much more they charge you to eat your food in the place. Considering they’re just wee sandwiches and baguettes that cost between around £2.50 and £3, I think it’s pretty unfair to charge an extra 60−75p for the chance to sit in the café while you eat them. If ever I’m after one of their baguettes, I also buy it to go.

Poor old Sandwiched In The City is not exactly sandwiched in the best location in the city. Positioned down one of the least appealing of Cardiff’s many arcades, I often forget it even exists. Most Cardiff cafés with a spot in one of the arcades get fantastic foot fall, and are nearly always busy, but that’s not so much the case for Dominions arcade. It doesn’t lead anywhere significant, and it doesn’t offer very much in the way of shops, and I struggle to remember the last time I ventured down there. As a result of its ghost town location, SITC is generally fairly quiet — unless you go during the peak lunchtime period when it’s exactly the opposite: heaving with workers on their lunch breaks, like just about every other eating establishment in town. Although this place serves quite nice sandwiches and drinks, and has seating both inside and under the cover of the arcade, there are so many other great places in the city centre where I’d rather pass my lunch hour.

just a few moments away from the hustle and bustle of Queen Street, Sandwiched in the City is a snack bar offering breakfasts, baguettes, paninis, teas, coffees and pastries to eat or takeaway, all of which are very tasty! When I was there at lunchtime yesterday it was extremely busy and appeared to be attracting many office workers on their precious lunch breaks. Not only were there tables in the snack bar itself but also outside in the arcade where people were watching the world go by. However as a fan of the hit TV show Sex and the City, I’m not quite sure whether to laugh or cry at the cafes’ name.

I feel that Jamie’s review pretty much sums up the whole experience that I had. I just want to reiterate his points just in case anyone looking here says to themselves ‘Well, that’s only one person’s feelings’. I didn’t have such bad service. My waitress wasn’t really surly or blunt. However, I found it to be below average really. It just wasn’t great and I didn’t feel important to them as a customer. The food itself, though, was good and the cakes are just delicious. I think that’s it’s the kind of place that I would go again if I was walking past it and was hungry because the food is good. However, I wouldn’t make a trip out of my way for the sake of bad service.

Not one to be negative in life I hate to have to go against it. However, after visiting Sandwiched in the city recently I wouldn’t be very truthful if I’d said I enjoyed my short time there. Now, what makes a good place to visit for me is the service you get. Obviously the food must be to your liking, but I am more likely to go back to a place for the service then the quality of food. Unfortunately I did not get this here. It’s quite expensive here and wasn’t short of getting back much change from a tenner after getting a bottle of coke, bacon sarnie and chocolate cake. However, it was the person who served me with such destine that really ruined my experience for me. For whatever reason it was, the lady that served was incredibly surly and blunt. I obviously caught someone having a bad day and she didn’t represent the rest of the staff who seemed fine. I just found it unprofessional and jarring to be made to feel reasonable for someones bad mood. Asides from that, the food was fine, bacon sarnie was quite tasty and I really enjoyed the chocolate cake that lightened the mood somewhat upon eating it.

On the plus side this little café is just off Queen Street s it’s really easy to get to. On the negative side they have a strange ruling on where you can sit. We bought two baguettes and as there wasn’t any seating available we asked if we could sit on the tables outside. Then when we did so we were shooed away and told that we had to pay extra to sit there. I understand an additional fee to sit in to cover expenses — but not when we asked to sit outside in the first place.
