I’m in a bit of a quandry over this one. We all know tanning salons are really bad for you and that using them too much can cause some serious, serious health problems. And some very odd looking people! I don’t really want to be suggesting anyone go. But then again, I do. I don’t want a tan, but as a student I spent a lot of time inside staring at a computer, and once the days shorten a bit of a vitamin D boost can be a good thing. This salon is handy on Albany Road, and is manned. The counter may seem a bit redundant as the machines are self use, but a manned tanning studio can only be a good thing to avoid serious burns and over– or inappropriate use. As a bit of a novice to these sorts of things I asked the lady at the counter. She was very helpful and asked me lots of things about my skin type etc. and we decided that the lowest amount of time in a stand up booth would be best. However, she was a bit pushy when it came to the extras and I was persuaded to buy some gel stuff. I don’t really know what it did other than make me sticky so when I tried to walk home my clothes stuck. But otherwise a pleasant experience. It was clean and well maintained. Just stand firm when it comes to the extras!

In the natural order of things sun beds are a bit obsolete unless you don’t get out much, and for us Brit’s that all too true, that and the lack of consistent year round sunlight. Supersun is inexpensive and therefore good value. I must make note that to really get the best out of the facilities it’s best to make multiple visits with the lowest duration spent in the beds as possible, as skin damage is a real possibility without monitoring the time. It’s probably a good idea to cook your self with a timer so the ‘ding’ makes sure you don’t get«crisp & dry». Anyhow a few minutes a day for a few weeks shouldn’t cause too much damage just don’t overdo it.

When are we going to learn that sun beds generally aren’t good for us? They are certainly no match for the real thing, and we can wear UV protection whilst we enjoy outdoor activities instead of cramming our sweaty bodies into an uncomfortably hot coffin! Where’s the pleasure in that? In special circumstance sun beds have their place. For people that suffer with SAD or dermatological conditions that respond well to sunlight,(whether it be real or synthesised), sun beds offer all-year support. But Supersun Tanning Studio plays the vanity card, and targets the narcissists amongst us, instead of mentioning the more profound benefits that can be obtained by people who, if they were to use the facilities, could possibly maintain for their mental health or improve their skin conditions, therefore preserving their self confidence and eliminating discomfort. But that would mean talking about issues that prove that we as humans fall short of perfection… and that wouldn’t do! It would also mean possibly restricting their potential customer base, thereby losing them revenue… Hmmm…

I have recently bought a dress for our ball(in case you hadn’t noticed, I talk about this is about one in every three reviews I do at the moment) which is really pale pink. Given that I live with someone with naturally gorgeously olive skin, who is also a cheerleader and will, therefore, be standing next to me in photos that will stand forever as a memento of our night, I decided that it was imperative that I didn’t look like some kind of blotchy, pale mess. Good plan. With this in mind, I went to the Supersun Tanning Studio. It was on said housemate’s recommendation too. It was a really good experience overall — good prices and very good equipment. There are some places around Cathays that have queues and appointments but this one is never busy as far as I’ve seen. So if you fancy a little tan top-up, this is a great place to go.
