This pub is huge! Massive in fact. So, you’ll always find somewhere to sit! The first time I went in was to meet a pal for a drink. It is pretty standard as a pub, but then this seems to be becoming rarer and rarer. There was an amazingly loud Karaōke going on and I wasn’t convinced. But after a bit of an explore, I found my friend safely round the corner, with little noise and we were able to have a good chat. So far so good. I’ve popped in a few times since. I’ve had food, pretty standard fare, and had fun on the quiz machine. It is a tricky one this one — each experience was like being in a different pub as I was always sat in different areas. Most recently we went for some food, sat outside and ordered a sharing platter cos we only really wanted something small. Big mistake — it was huge! I mean massive. I mean, it didn’t stop us eating it all, but still. Definitely good value for money! So yeah, nothing mind blowing, but a perfectly good place for a pint with pals without all the whistle and bells. Actually, quite a relief really!

I used to go to the Beverley when I was trying to be an under age drinker — many years ago. The reason for this was because the older looking amongst us would pop into the bar and get the drinks whilst the rest of us would wait outside in the patio /garden out front. The reason I say this is because, to this day whenever I have been there I still tend to drink outside especially on Rugby international days. They tend to put a little marquee outside to accommodate the extra drinking crowd. It a good pre and post match pub because of this and the generally good atmosphere. Can’t say I’ve had food here or stayed here but if you want to get in the mood for a game or concert at the stadium this is a good pub to be at.

Housed in a couple of lovely big late Victorian houses, this has been the Beverley Hotel since 1937. The bar still has the original etched windows and parlour fireplace, revealing the building’s previous function as a grand family home. Today it’s a decent pub with friendly staff and the drinks are more reasonably priced than many Pontcanna pubs. It’s very close to Sophia Gardens sports centre, Bute Park, and the Millennium Stadium, making it popular with a good mix of locals, sports fans and even tourists(it is also a two star hotel with 17 en suite rooms including singles, doubles and families). It’s quite a popular pre– and post– rugby match drinkery because of its proximity to the city centre and the Millennium Stadium, and the fact that there’s overspill room outside both at the front and back of the pub. Inside it is a fairly traditional pub with dark wood and those slightly hideous, richly patterned pub carpets and seat covers. If it’s good weather, it’s actually nicer to sit outside; there are two good outdoor seating areas to choose from — a nice beer garden at the rear, and tables on the courtyard in front of the house next to the road.

The Beverly Hotel has just been awarded a two star rating by the Welsh Tourist Board, something that the manager, Kate Shelton, is thrilled about. The last time i spoke to her I think she mentioned something along the lines of how she now felt that The Beverly was finally on the map, and that all their hard work has paid off. They have 17 rooms in total, all of which are en suite, catering for families, doubles and singles. Part of M and B( ) this is not an independent concern… but it feels like it. This is largely due to the dedication of Kate, as well as a steadfast local regular crowd, and the staff in general. As always it’s the people that make the place, and this is no exception. The pub, on the ground floor, has a rear garden and a covered terrace out front. The interior is very traditional, and therefore a little garish with bold prints… but we will forgive it this! With affordable drinks and a pleasant atmosphere, it’s always at the top of my list of choices for a quick stop off when I’m on Cathedral Road.

Although this is by no means the nicest pub in the area(nor the most sophisticated, nor in the best location), The Beverley has a certain charm that cannot be denied. For some reason I always feel very comfortable when frequenting this pub thanks to a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The food here is extremely good value for money, and you get good portions well presented. Simple pub grub that fills you up, burgers, pasta and the like, something for everyone. Because of all the different offices around the area and the nice houses, this pub attracts quite a nice range of clientele. Although it can get a little rowdy on sunny evenings(they have a lovely and tempting front garden full of tables and chairs under the trees), it’s always a pleasant, manageable type of rowdiness. They lose a star because they never have salsa for their nachos. Annoying, and I’m surprised every time.

So this was right next to my old work office and it was perfect for that after work drink when the sun was shinning. I don’t remember much about the inside of this place because we were always outside, but i’m pretty sure it has a very traditional feel with a nice warm fireplace in the winter. Its a Great Value Pub, also known as cheap and very cheerful to me. You can get a bottle of wine for six quid which is just what you need after a long week. Because of the location you do tend to get lots of people from all the surrounding offices and a wide age range of people. I wouldn’t come here for a wild night out, but defiantly for a cheap start to an evening.
