Zi’s is great. Every time we were working late in uni it was the favourite place to get a takeaway. The food is good and everyone is really friendly and kind. One of my favourites is the roast duck in sweet and sour plum sauce… YUM!

Well-cooked Chinese meals in a friendly atmosphere. Today for lunch I purchased their house tofu(silky tofu with their special vinegar-garlic batter and spring greens), along with rice and a bubble milk tea as dessert(also known as pearl tea, the pearls being tapioca). The total, with my 10% student discount, came out to 9.50 quid. Given the generally favorable portions, I was full eating half of what I ordered, so I saved the other half for dinner. What stands out for me about Zi’s Café is definitely their bubble milk tea. I’ve been trying to hunt for good bubble milk tea in the UK, and unfortunately, most places either use powdered milk tea or overcook their tapioca. However, Zi’s finally does it the way I’ve been hoping for – tea leaves(or so I believe) infused with milk with the appropriate amount of sugar shaken properly in a cocktail shaker so to create that bubble expected of a proper bubble milk tea. Props to that.

Zi’s prime studentville location in Cathays combined with its reasonable prices for Chinese food have made it popular with the area’s resident students. The décor is simple, but light, clean and pleasant, and the menu has some interesting Chinese dishes and drinks such as yam pearl milk tea(or ‘Bubble Tea’). There are plenty of tasty vegetarian options on the menu made with bean curd and a colourful array of different veggies, as well as meat and seafood dishes — and what’s refreshing about this place is that(unlike the food at many Chinese restaurants) the dishes are full of flavour, often a little spicy, and aren’t too gloopy or greasy. You can get a delicious, complete noodle-based dish for less than £6 and the portions are generous, again going down well with hungry, cash-strapped students — along with the 10% discount with an NUS card.
