Carlisle Castle isn’t the first castle in Carlisle. It was built on top of a Roman Fort, which in turn was built on top of an old Celtic fort.
This castle however, was built 900 years ago and has seen many battles and major historical moments. Mary Queen of Scots was kept prisoner there (see the licking stones int the dungeon!). The castle even had a part to play in the English Civil War, the Jacobite rebellion and much more.
Maintained by English Heritage, the entrance fee goes towards the upkeep of the castle.
