The main reason why you come to Berry Hill just on the border between Cardiff and Newport on the old Newport Road is to to PYO… Pick Your Own fruit of course. During the summer and autumn I go a couple of times to Berry Hill to pick fresh fruit, there’s a selection of soft and hard fruit as well as squash’s and peas to harvest. Recently the farm has developed a really good farm shop. You go to the shop to buy the fruit you’ve picked but also to stock up on homemade jams, desserts, relishes, pickles, bread and locally sourced cheese and meat. Last time I was there they also had freezers stocked with ice cream and desserts and a whole host of other goodies. One sad sign of the times is, they no longer grow strawberries, as so many were getting«pinched» when they were getting picked it wasn’t viable for them anymore. The owners are some of Rick Stein’s culinary food heroes.

We’ve not quite got to ‘that’ time of year yet, but already there’s talk of Christmas gently surfacing, like a sour stench from the drains… insidiously permeating our thoughts… Oh. it won’t be long now before the TV is awash with Christmas ads, all jingly and tinkly, urging us to invest vast sums of money in stuff that our friends and family will resent us for, for years… ’tis a treacherous time! The perils are manifold and grave… There is however, one safe haven within all of the Christmas commerce where it is difficult to put a step wrong… Christmas trees and turkey are the stuff that can get you out of a lot of bother! Berry Hill Fruit Farm sells them both! They also sell holly, mistletoe, and wreaths. Their turkeys are free range, as are their chickens and eggs… They also supply fresh veg making them almost a one-stop shop for all of the essentials at Christmas.
