Typical Wetherspoons, with typical Wetherspoons clientèle. Having said that, comfy surroundings, good service, reasonably priced ales and beers. A plus, good nachos with great chilli con carne. Nachos and extras with a beer, on Mexican Monday, for £5.99. No complaint from me.

breakfast on Sunday, not too busy so lots of free tables, but only 2 staff, took ages to get served, table sticky, food arrived quickly and was good, hot and lots of it.

This former theatre looks fancy but gets ridiculously crowded, especially on Thursday and Saturday nights — it can take hours to get a drink

Found this place after leaving the Fox and Fiddler in disgust, the music being too loud. Great selection of ales on 24 handpumps, the ones we had were all in very condition. Staff were friendly and efficient. No problems with other customers, lots of Essex girls largin’ it, loads of geezers in short sleeves but no attitude.

Awful. Just awful. I used to come here quite often as it is a wetherspoons pub so you kind of know what to expect and it used to be OK. However, a year ago I got food poisoning eating here and have avoided it all costs since. In recent years it has become the haunt of drunk old men and other undesirables. Its dirty, the staff are rude and the mannequins in the old theatre part of the building are creepy. There are cheaper and nicer pubs elsewhere In town!

Have to wait ages to get served. The pub plays no music so it seems when busy you can’t hear anything. also when busy no where to sit.

if you like drunk old men insulting you and your partner, breathing down your neck and then falling over, then come here. This has happened to me twice here. though i do go there quite often, not because i like it, but because its a weatherspoons, and it is cheeeap. it is probably the worst pub ive been to in colchester, but its also the best, because its the only place you can get nice and oiled for a tenner. the food can be slow and awful, but can sometimes be ok. as a rule, dont get food there unless its quiet or your children are too uncontrolable to take anywhere else.

The Playhouse has become very poor over the past couple of years, mainly due to the poor service. Regardless of the time of day you go in, you will still wait at least ten minutes to be served(my record for a thursday evening is thirty!). The atmosphere is fairly dark and dingy and they could do with redecorating, as the pub has a lot of potential. However, the drinks are still cheap and you get what you pay for I suppose. A good place to meet for the initial drink before continuing your night, and is a good place to meet new people as the pub is often very busy.

I have to say this place has gone down hill in the past few years. I used to use the playhouse for a meeting up place as the drinks used to be so cheap but now they have put the prices right up and seems to take forever to get a drink and I have given up a few times. I have not tried the food in here yet but not sure I ever would. Ok for meeting friends then quickly moving on to some where else. The place has also become very dirty.

Awful. The service is awful no matter what time of the day it is. The staff seem more bothered about catching up with their friends instead of actually serving customers. The place is always dirty. Last time i went it was very quite and there were plenty of staff(all chatting at the bar) and not one clean table. I ordered food and it came out with hair in it. avoid at all costs.
