From what I remember this is the only Chinese buffet restaurant in Derby. It is a good buffet, has a varied choice with over 80 dishes to choose from. The food is refilled as soon as its three quarters empty. The staff are efficient and prompt at cleaning up when you go to get another plate. The food is fresh, tasty, non greasy, wholesome and filling. I do like going to chinese buffets so will pop in here when I am next in Derby.

i am always cold when i go there as there never seems to be enough heating for such a vast area. Went last Christmas(boxing day) and swore I would never go again as the only served chips, chopped sausages, mini pizza and limited mains .food cold and without taste seen better from Iceland or Farm foods

LOVE the food cheif is very nice good atomiser.

We ate at May Sum in derby last night but wont be returning. The food had obviously been standing for hours. It was cold and overcooked. The place was like a school canteen, very unwelcoming. There was no sushi left at 8pm. The only desserts were tiny pieces of dried up gâteau and jelly and ice cream. It doesnt even deserve one star. We eat regularly at nottingham May Sum which is a thousand times better.

There are other places to eat in Derby. Perhaps I caught them on a bad night as there seem to be many glowing reviews but May Sum is one place I won’t be back in. The food was cold, the staff weren’t interested and the place had the atmosphere of a funeral parlour. I’ve given it one star as Qype won’t let me submit the review with no stars.

Good cheap and cheerful buffet restaurant in Derby city centre. Is huge — I have never seen it more that ½ full — located in an old theatre with lovely high ceilings. Has an upstairs which does not appear to be used. Food is fine, run of the mill standard but great selection — usually has 3 soups available and wide choice of starters, lots of meaty main courses and 4 – 5 veggie ones with rice and noodle dishes, as well as a varied salad bar. Good selection of deserts, including ice cream, cakes, banana fritters and fruit. Lunch menu is especially good value. Staff are quick to clear plates and bring drinks.

A warm welcome awaits you at this 300-seater restaurant. Situated in the former Grand Theatre, the vaulted ceiling remains, providing a light and spacious atmosphere where large parties, corporate events and family celebrations can be easily catered for. Offering a choice of 80 dishes, this truly is an introduction to Chinese cuisine on a grand scale. You may opt to start your meal with a range of sushi, Chinese hors d’oeuvres or the classic aromatic duck with pancakes. Main dishes include meats, seafood and vegetarian options with appropriate accompaniments. If you are still hungry a choice of ice cream, homemade desserts or the chocolate fountain may entice you.

I have been to May Sum a few times now, and it really is an excellent place to eat. The staff are really friendly from when you first step in the door. The surrounding a relatively nice, if not a little basic, but the place is very clean and tidy. The food tastes excellent, and there is a wide selection of dishes to choose from. There are non-chinese based dishes which cater for youngers children or those who want a wider variety of choice. The deserts are okay, and pretty standard for an all you can eat buffet. The location is really convenient and offers a great alternative to the fast food restaurants found nearby.

Great chinese buffet restaurant, good food and reasonable prices. I have visited a few times with a friend & our children and we always find the atmosphere is relaxed and we feel we can stay as long as we like. Would recommend this to all.

I have visited May Sum for lunch in the week and found it to be really excellent. Very friendly staff, and clean, but basic surroundings — reminds me a bit if a canteen. Really well located in the city centre and is a much better alternative to nearby fastfood outlets. Really good selection of different dishes which are extremely tasty. Cheap take-out boxes are available if you don’t have time to sit down and are just looking for something to take back to work in your lunch hour.

May Sum is my absolute favourite Chinese buffet in Derby. The staff are always very polite and friendly. They are very efficient in taking drinks orders and bringing them immediately. The staff don’t hover around the tables but as soon as you leave to get your next course they take your plate and clean up for you. I love the food from May Sum and I have never found it cold it is always the right temp for me. I love the pizza they serve although I have only found it in there in the evenings. There is a great selection of finger type food for your starter including my favourite sesame toasts, samosas, spring rolls, wontons and even chips if your should prefer. The main dishes are enough to have you go back twice including rice and noodles and chow mein. A huge choice of classic Chinese stews and curries. I love the Chicken and Pineapple. As for Desserts, May Sum are the only buffet to offer Scoop Ice cream as opposed to the Mr Whippy type so you can guarantee there will always be Ice cream on offer. There is a selection of flavours — Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry. They also offer a selection of fresh fruit and jellies. They also have Pineapple or Banana fritters(Although I like to have them as part of my starter course) Of course the piece de resistance is the Chocolate fountain. I have found they don’t always switch it on at lunch times unless it is really busy. There is usually a huge bowl of grapes and a selection of cakes too. I have to mention the surroundings. The building where May Sum is housed has been many things over the years but still holds its great charm of the once Grand theatre that it was. It is roomy and has a relaxed atmosphere inside with great karaōke music playing in the backgroundI often wish they would rig up a microphone in the background so we could get up and sing if we wanted to

Nice surroundings, and the chocolate fountain was great for the kids. The only down sides were that the food wasn’t very warm and as the plates were cold it made the food almost luke warm by the time you have chosen and sat down. Very disappointed that there were no prawn dishes or seaweed, which are my 2 favourite dishes. I have never been to a chinese that doesn’t have prawn dishes or seaweed! We dined on a saturday lunchtime which wasn’t that busy, but we will give it another try on a saturnday evening, hoping to get a few prawn dishes and seaweed, along with hotter food as it should be busier.
