Varsity

Varsity is a well known franchise of pubs located across the country. This specific one in Friargate Derby is a friendly pub which has recently been decked out with new furniture. As a student, it was a great place to go as it ran promotions such as BOGOF and discount cards. It has a pool table and various other facilities such as LCD screens and they show all the major sporting events.

Varsity is on the main bar strip which makes up Friar Gate in Derby. It is a good place to go at the beginning your night out for cheap drinks and is very popular with students offering discounts with a student club card. Interior is warm and friendly and has a nice atmosphere. Food is typical mainstream pub food i.e. chips and toasted rolls and wraps but it is very good value. Service is pretty good, however, I’ve been served a few times by foreign people who don’t quite grasp the language properly and got my and my friends food orders completely wrong. However, they were very apologetic and replaced our meals for free. They have a decent sized beer garden at the side, as well as pool tables inside.

Been here a few times for lunch. Food is reasonably priced, good sized portions and usually tastes good. Relaxed atmosphere, gets quite busy in the evenings and is popular with students. Good music always played — mainly alternative/​indie style.
