My pre-salsa food search brought me into Dorking town centre for the first time tonight. I spotted Zafron on the High Street and as they had eschewed the use of words such as ‘Palace’ or ‘Tandoori’, it wasn’t immediately clear this was an Indian restaurnat and I had to check the menu to see what sort of food they served. They’ve gone for modern décor rather than the traditional flock wallpaper. Service was good and the food arrived quickly. The young waiter engaged me in chat about salsa and checked back frequently to make sure things were OK. My mango lassi was perhaps the weak part of my meal — it was a little watery and not sweet enough My popadom came with good condiments. I piled on the yoghurt dip, mango chutney and chilli pickle. Before my brain had engaged in gear, I ordered onion bhaji, forgetting that my salsa partners may object to onion bhaji breath! Fortunately, I didn’t get too many obvious complaints tonight! The onion bhaji was crispy and nicely enhanced by some yoghurt dip. Perhaps I would suggest cooking it more as a ball than flattened — that way, the interior of the bhaji remains more moist and adds another dimension of texture and flavour to the dish rather than all the onion being crispy. My main course of assemase gosht consisted of nice tender pieces of lamb, which was delicately spiced and cooked with spinach. It was served with rice and a paratha. I used the mint chocolate which came with the bill to fix my bhaji breath and eating at Zafron was a good start to my evening of salsa
