Spending a weekend at the tip doesn’t sound like a fun idea. The one near me is small and dreary. After driving through lots of new housing areas we turn off for the recycling centre. Even upon arrival, this area looks smart and it was busy and there were three men in hi-vis directing people on which bin to put their goods in. There are about 15 cages and some cages are locked and you leave the goods outside. A great place to environmentally and safely discard and recycle your household waste.

This is one of Greater Manchester’s ‘super centres’ for recycling and boy are they right. Although tucked away down a narrowish lane off Sinderland Road, this place is massive but has a convenient layout — the access route encircles the site with containers both in the centre and larger skips set lower down for larger waste materials. Working in the waste industry, it’s always a pleasant feeling seeing public sites which are tidy, convenient and most importantly safe to use. The staff are very approachable. You can bring pretty much anything here as long as it’s from a domestic source(no commercial waste is allowed). If you have any electrical items or furniture that can be reused there are separate containers for these. Tip: If you’ve not been here before and have a SatNav, use it — the sign directing you from the main road isn’t that obvious. Tip: It’s open all year(except Christmas Day and New Years Day).
