This is now called Popolo café bar and kitchen Durham and is far far better than when it was Brown Sugar. Same chain as the famous Newastle Popolo Bar kitchen and worth a visit if in Durham City.

Found on New Elvet very close to some of the Durham University lecture theatres, Brown Sugar is ever popular with students wanting to grab a coffee or hot chocolate between lectures. However, it’s is equally popular with non-students and it’s the sort of place that young people and older people can visit and neither feel out of place. Their hot beverages are very nice and they do some good smoothies. The cakes they have on offer are delicious, possibly even beating Café Continental, but much cheaper. The food they offer is good too, with a good range of sandwiches and pizzas(which you can get half price in happy hour), as well as more substantial meals. The décor is cool, yet elegant and classy. The leather sofas and chairs are very comfy. At night it becomes a bar, but is still best known and loved in Durham as a café. The only reason that Brown Sugar doesn’t get 5 stars is that it’s not exactly cheap, although granted it’s not as expensive as some other cafes either. And it annoys me that they’ve stopped doing hot chocolate with marshmallows!

Brown Sugar is located in New Elvet, Durham. Because it’s not actually in the centre of Durham, it’s not as busy as some of the other coffee shops. I think they turn this to their advantage though, as it’s become really cosy with a great atmosphere. The drinks are fairly reasonably priced and they also sell vert tasty, but very addictive cookies! A great place to meet up with people or hang out with friends. In the summer they have a section of pavement so that you can go outside to drink your tea or coffee. A great little place!

Brown Sugar is a great coffee shop in the heart of the lovely city of Durham. It is the kind of place you can spend many hours chilling with the papers on the comfy couches. The coffee and cakes are good. The atmosphere is friendly, the clientale trendy, but not scarily so.

I know coffee shops are pricey but this really was pricey, and they did not have a good choice of snacks. The staff were a bit stuck up.

Nice wee café that is more welcoming than it can appear. Comfortable seating and always a pile of papers make it a decent spot for Sunday brunch or to watch a footie game in the afternoon. In evenings the lights go down a little and the music is chilled. The coffee’s are okay but nothing special. The food is much better and at reasonable prices. A personal favourite is mussels and proper chunky chips for little over 6 quid.
