This place came highly recommended by a colleague. It was worth the walk from my hotel. The Steak & Ale pie was incredible!

Expensive beer, rude staff, average food. 3* because of their commitment to keeping several real ales on at all times, but on several occasions the beer has been off and I’ve been told«nobody else has complained so its fine». Hmm. Gets extremely busy at the weekend because the bar is at the end if the narrow front part of the pub which bottlenecks the stairs to the seating at the back. Avoid on Fridays if you just want a quiet pint. IMO It’s only so popular because of its location.

Sounds worth a visit across the threshold but they could do with knowing the difference between ensured and ensued.

One of my favourite pubs when visiting Durham in business. Great way to break up long weeks away from London in a historic building full if character

This is what’s missing from too many pubs«down south». A real commitment to guest ales was visible both from the current selection and from the previous pump labels displayed on the walls. We popped in for a pint in the main square whilst on the tourist trail on Good Friday. I tried a beer called«Spring Crazy» from a brewery called«Beer Rocks». Pretty decent with lots of hops but the texture was too creamy taking nearly a minute to settle in the glass. Friendly good quality pub– the menu looked decent too but we weren’t stopping that long…

Another great place for a pint in Durham. Terrific choice of guest ales and a friendly atmosphere-always worth a visit. The big window at the front means you get a reasonable amount of natural light in the pub, making it a really pleasant place to read the paper and have a beer. There is food available, though I can’t comment on this-I’ll find an excuse to try it and amend my review accordingly.

Having been in this pub on more then one occasion, I can honestly say that it’s a great pub! Small by most pub’s standards, in the Market Tavern this just makes the place seem more cosy and intimate, this is helped by the friendly staff. During the day/early evening they serve really nice food and for a small pub they have a surprisingly wide selection of guest ales to try, while looking out onto the Market Place. On a weekend they cash in on the ‘going out’ trade by turning the music up loud and partying away! The prices are reasonable and it is a great place to start a night out.
