Rating des Ortes: 5 Edinburgh, United Kingdom
I am going to do something I have never done before — I am rating a non-existent place. Why? Because it matters. Because Gateway theatre is a vibrant part of the history of Scottish theatre. And even though its building has been emptied, if one walks through the gate and heads towards the small adjacent building which served as the box office, one cannot fail to see names written on the stone plates under his feet. Those names are of Scots, both playwrights and actors, who have been also part from Queen Margaret University. The same university is still an owner of the place but is desperately trying to get rid of it. Why? Because… and the reasons fall like the Niagara waterfalls. There is still a theatre department which is shrinking, from this year there isn’t any acting course, and, to remind you, this is the second school in Scotland which nurtures actors, directors, producers, etc. Gateway theatre history goes beyond its current owner history. It is the place of the former Lyceum theatre, where Robert Kemp and all budding new talents of Scotland worked. What will be the fate of the skeleton of Gateway? Why not keep it and turn it into a small artistic oasis on leith walk? why not keep it and run as a theatre?
