Joanna’s Place is a decent café just off the Royal Mile. We popped in due to the lack of scones in our regular next door, the Edinburgh Larder. Joanna’s did indeed have scones, so we were delighted to give it a try. The place is very quiet. I was surprised at how quietly I was speaking so as not to be heard by others all over the café. This isn’t a positive or negative point, it just stood out to me. There was also music playing in the background, which seemed unnecessarily loud, probably due to the relative silence across the room. We both had tea and scones. The tea came in a lovely large pot, and with nice cups to drink from. I really liked the tea. A+. The scones were significantly less appealing. Mine tasted burnt, the whipped cream provided was poor(especially compared to clotted cream in other places), and the jam was only okay as well. I love scones, and was definitely quite disappointed with this one. The place does seem good for lunch, with a decent selection of soups and sandwiches etc. but I can’t comment on these as of yet. Service is pretty quick and friendly. Overall though, there are better cafés in the immediate area.

We ended up here because the Edinburgh Larder next door was full. From the outside it looked a bit like an old fashioned tea shop but inside it was lovely. The staff were really welcoming telling us what their specials were and later when some freshly made scones had come out of the oven. For of us had brunch here 3 of us had the scrambled eggs and chorizo which was delightful and the fourth had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. There was a decent amount of salmon unlike other places where you only get a few token pieces. We spent a good couple of hours there and were not rushed at all which was lovely. We had offers or more toast and our water was constantly refilled. It really felt like you were someone’s guests and they wanted to make sure you had a nice time. So many places these days have lost that personal touch so it was lovely to find out here. Overall it was a great find and I will definitely be going back soon.

What a cute little coffee place! You can get everything for a sweet tooth but also for the savory heart! I had a freshly baked scone and it was delicious!

Really nice café just office royal Mile, really friendly staff and cheap food. Laid back music and great atmosphere. Wide range of choice on the menu, and great value for money! Minimum spend to pay on card is £10, so have to buy a few things to reach that target but the food is so nice you’d happily do it! Staff really nice and will chat to you during your meal without getting in the way, and on hand for anything you need. Wish I’d found this place sooner as I will be coming here every time in in Edinburgh!
