It seems a little strange reviewing a cash machine — surely they are all the same? Well yes, that’s true, but in Scotland most cash machines dispense Scottish banknotes. So if you go to a Bank of Scotland machine, you will get Bank of Scotland banknotes. Go to Lloyds TSB or Abbey and they won’t dispense their own notes but they will dispense Scottish banknotes. Now if you are in Scotland on a visit and plan on spending all your money in Scotland then Scottish banknotes are fine. They are even legal tender in England, and major retailers will accept them in England, or any high street bank will change them. When they become a problem is if you try to change them at a Bureau du Change overseas — a problem I have sadly learned to my cost. So this is where this cash machine becomes very useful — because it dispenses English banknotes! If you are a traveller or are heading somewhere you may need English banknotes you can use this machine safe in the knowledge you will get banknotes with the Queen’s head on them. Another thing that’s great about this machine is the fact you can use it to top up your Pay as You Go mobile phone!
