Fosters is a bit of an institution in the town, as there used to be a large department store of that name at the top of Cheap Street, in premises now occupied by Amica. Back then, Fosters was a general haberdashers in the old style, and nowadays this side of the business is long gone, retaining only the lingerie sales. Now moved to a small premises half-way down Cheap Street, this is the place your mum or gran would go to, in order to get ‘sensible’ underwear. That’s not to say it doesn’t stock nice stuff — it certainly does — but it’s less geared towards fashion and more to practicality and quality, it’s hallmarks. Selling just ladies lingerie(underwear, hoisery and nightwear) it still does solid business, for ladies of a certain age who simply wouldn’t be able to find the right sort of stuff for them in a hi-fashion boutique. And who wouldn’t want to be seem rummaging round the open displays in a supermarket for such personal wear items! Prices reflect quality, medium to expensive, but it’s definately the place to go for good personal service and good quality items.
