There must be more hairdressers on Duke Street than any other street, or at least any that I have ever seen. Most of these hairdressers and barbers seem to cater for the older generation, specialising in perms, plaits and bobs for the blue rinse brigade. I had often passed by this place, assuming it wouldn’t be up to much since it was just another Duke Street ‘dresser, however on a day when I was in a rush and hadn’t the time to go into town to get my hair done, I decided to head for the most decent looking local hairdresser. I was unsure whether to go in or not as there wasn’t a single client within, however since it was a Wednesday afternoon, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. Fed up of my dull ‘do, I explained to the hairdresser what I wanted, slightly concerned about what I’d let myself in for, as I was fairly sure she was much younger than myself. I must admit that she did a very good job, firstly by actually listening to my requests(as hairdressers often don’t), and also by going to the extra effort of straightening my hair and giving it a boost with some big velcro rollers, as I’d previously mentioned that I’d like a bit more volume to my hair. My only complaint would be the girl stopped to attend to what appeared to be a family member, who popped in to get her foils done — which she began whilst I was left sitting mid hairdo. Overall, I was quite impressed by this place, where my cut and blow dry cost an inexpensive £25, with products and styling at no extra charge. Compared with some city centre prices of £40 and over, this was very reasonable for the quality of cut and styling that can easily match their inner city competitors.
