Shame this place closed down. It was one of the few places in the west end that you could get a really tasty ciabatta sandwich made with real, fresh Mediterranean ingredients — best sampled in their meze dishes. Unfortunately, it was always very quiet and the Turkish staff would prepare your sandwich in Greek Maybe Time.

I am not sure about this café, either. It seems to be generic and even the website has that annoyed Spanish holiday music. The food, however, is good: organic and fresh, tending towards a healthier set of options. The lasagna was a good main dish– quality meat and nicely cooked. It might find its place as a restaurant in the future, but it might be optimistic to see this taking off as a student haunt. It does have good metzes, too: a little expensive, perhaps, but all exquisite.

Upon seeing this prime Byres Road location turned into yet another little café, there was a collective«meh» from Westenders. After all, this is a West End café by numbers; snacks, check; inoffensive music(customers from the shop’s pervious incarnation, Echo, will be crying into their cappucino), check; fairy lights, check; mums with prams, check. It’s nice but in such a competitive market is nice really enough? With bums on seats beyond the 4pm mark generally belonging to staff members(almost always on their phones to boot), this place will have to up its charm offensive and establish a unique selling point if it’s going to have any future in the area. And quickly.

Plonked on the busy and competitive Byres Road, Mediterraneo is a café/bitro offering ”authentic’ Mediterranean grub. I popped in here recently for a morning coffee and a spot of breakfast and left with a «hmmmmm» not sure echoing around my head. Ok, where to begin. Its a nice enough place, pleasant décor, friendly staff, slightly iffy music, and what looks like a nice menu with a definite Greek twist. With two main seating areas, one on the ground floor and a raised mezzanine area its bigger than it looks from the outside, yet still feels pretty cramped even when its empty. The grub itself(i plumped for a Ayrshire Bacon Ciabatta) was good if firmly situated in the«airport café» price range, and was served rather unusually i feel with a side salad… with a breakfast roll, in Scotland, in the winter, in Scotland, to a Scottish person, in the winter… traumatised, me? Anyway having hoovered up my piggy roll and slurped down my very tasty latte, i still felt a little bit ripped. Yeah the grub was good but a fiver for a roll and coffee feels a bit on the steep side even for Byres Road. I reckon this place is more of a lunch time venue and by the looks of the menu its seems pretty interesting if again a little on the steep side. Brownie points are added however for the free WIFI and comfy wee seats(upstairs at the back), however its not the kind of place which would have me racing back especially as they serve salad, in the mornings, with a breakfast roll, in Scotland, in the winter… in Scotland…
