Long time favourite. Go here probably once every couple of months. The service is always very friendly. The food is brilliant. Generally stick with my favourites, chasni or patia. Not had a bad curry yet, even with takeaway. Then again 1 complaint I would give is that with the Set lunch menu’s they seem to hold back on the chicken that you get with your curry. Enough sauce and rice. Last time I was in, it had a new make over. Looks completely different. Kitchen has moved somewhere, guessing downstair. No happy Mr Salma about so hope he has not left. Big fan of the place but it just doesnt feel the same. Need to get reaquainted. Not totally sure if they are still doing the morroccan side of life, too much change to take in. Still if you are in or around Charing X this place is good for food. At least worth the try.

Five stars is a big thing. Seriously. The guide Michelin states that, to be awarded it’s top 3 stars, a restaurant must have quality, originality and consistency. So, no less for a Unilocal 5 stars. Quality in abundance, if by quality you mean value. At 5.95 for a two course business lunch(plus tea or coffee) this is an absolute steal. It’s a bigger steal than buying Manhattan from the Native Americans for $ 20. The mushroom pakora: a crisp golden sheath enclosing happily resilient mushrooms, not long pulled from the earth. The chicken bhuna(extra hot only if you can handle it) surprisingly generous(considering the tariff) and zingy — difficult to do with boneless meat. The nan bread, star of this show, the size of a small hubcap, gleaming and steaming, requiring nothing less than both hands to disassemble. Originality…more difficult. Nothing here is ground-breaking but it is the closest thing to genuine Middle Eastern hospitality that you’ll get this side of the M8. They welcome you with smiles, serve you with smiles and see you off with smiles. If you’ve been a few times, you will feel like coming home. Consistency? Well, yes. We’ve been going here for years and, if anything, they’ve gone from strength to strength. These are really nice folk doing a really nice job. Oh, you want proof? At the end of the meal, tea just served, my companion asked for sweetener. Misunderstanding her, our waitress went off and returned with a small plate of little biscuits. SHe thought it was sweets we wanted. Not enough that they fed us practically for free at 5.95 per head, but they’ll give you biscuits, just because you asked.

immaculately done curry. fresh ingredients. decent spice levels and full of taste. lovely staff and fairly cheap. i had the lamb curry the last time i was there and it was just right. So good i can imagine the proverbial little old asian ladies in the back room working away at it. One of my top curry haunts in Glasgow, but just too out of the way from work to be a regular lunch.

Well, well, well, quite the surprise that no one else seems to know how awesome this place is! Like Chris and Christian before me, I’m going to blow the lid on Café Salma. It’s terrific! Staff, food, menu, service — all win, all the time! I’ve only been here twice, but each time has been a delight. Chris treated me to a curry first time round(many thanks, friend) — had me some yummy jaipuri, served up in a piping hot dish. The food flew into my mouth in an ever-so-unladylike manner but what can I say? I couldn’t help myself! Upstairs you would be forgiven for thinking it’s a takeaway — it’s very low-key. It looks more like a café. Downstairs the area opens up to reveal some more traditional Moroccan surroundings, and a wee partitioned area for group parties that is very cosy! My most recent visit last week was largely successful. The waiter’s dealt very well with stress and one guy(on his first week!) managed to appease 30 hungry hippos, so yay. With memorable, friendly service and curries that linger in your mind, I will definitely be back. I feel like it’s a secret delight — but it shouldn’t be a secret that this place has been great for over 12 years.

I am just back from a bite to eat at the Salma where I probably eat two or three times a month. As usual, I was well pleased with the food and the service. I just wish there were more restaurants like this. The food here lacks the elegance that you find in some Indian restaurants(the Tiffin Rooms just along the road or Khushi’s in Edinburgh), but the sign outside advertises«home cooking» and that’s pretty much what they deliver. The food is consistently tasty and well-cooked but not fussy. I have never been disappointed with what I’ve ordered, and I can’t say that about many restaurants, not even the fabulous Asia Style. Personal favourites? Moroccan soup, Kofta Pallak and Tandoori Chops(these are best shared unless you have a huge appetite). Service in the Salma is excellent. Maybe everybody knew your name in Cheers, but at the Salma they know your face and welcome you back with real warmth. They even remember where you like to sit. The waiters are attentive without being intrusive. There are a lot of fancier restaurants could be learning from the Salma how to do «customer service». The only thing that stops me giving the Salma five stars is that in winter some of the seats can be very drafty when the door is opening and closing every few minutes. Yes, there’s plenty of seating downstairs, but some sort of air curtain or double door would be nice in deepest, darkest winter.

What can I say? Having had a curry in the East End of London I’ve never bought into the whole Glasgow«Curry Capital» ideology. I had grown tired of «authentic» Indian recipes which simply did not deserve the name. Then, one day, a friend took me to Café Salma. It is a gem, a true revelation. The Chicken Pakora is truly a dish to behold. Whatever you order, the meat is always so tender and cooked to perfection. As previously written, the Tajine Maghdoor is nothing short of excellent. The Chicken Dopiaza is another favourite of my own, a marvellous dish. Curries are offered as mild or hot. Be warned, the description is very apt. They are to my taste, but stick to the mild if your idea of hot is a Madras sauce from a supermarket! Once you have eaten in Café Salma, any other Indian restaurant you have previously favoured will seem very much second best. The welcome is friendly, the staff are hard working and charming. The lack of an alcohol licence is actually an advantage, as it keeps away some of the less attractive clientele that an Indian restaurant can attract. Wholly recommended.

Popped in here the other day with the lovely Marj C after raving(RAVING) about the place to anyone who would listen to me. Two reviews on Unilocal for this awesome wee joint? What the furry horse?! Anyway, bizarre expletives aside, I’m once again left in disbelief at how awesome this joint is. Not only is the grub immensely tasty, the service fast, efficient and polite, but the price, THEPRICE, is well reasonable. Two folks, two curries(try the Lamb Pallak), a naan bread(peshwari) and a couple of cokes for a shade over 20 of your earth dollar/pounds. Just splendid. Please go here the next time you have a curry craving. Yeah sure we have some amazing curry houses in sunny Glasgow, but for me, this wee hidden gem is well, a hidden gem. I do words me. Go. Tell me i’m wrong, I dares ya!

Moroccan, Italian and Indian is not a common mix on menus in my experience but it works well at Café Salma. My companions all went for various Indian dishes with no complaints but I personally can recommend the Tajine Maghdoor(get it with the egg too). Very keenly priced and as there is no alcohol licence(no idea if they’re covered for byob) this kept our expenditure to £10 a head and gave a welcome breather before more pints. The welcome was effusive and the service very courteous so this is a restaurant I’ll happily return to in the future.

Café Salma is a brilliant wee eatery on Sauchiehall street on the other side of the M8. We regularly get takeaway from here when we are tired with ordering from the menu at work and it never fails to disapoint! The manager here is the friendliest guy you will meet! Service on a whole is second to none and they always throw in free popadoms and chutneys, ace! It may not look much from the outside, and the décor is a bit dated, but you won’t be disapointed with the meal and service you receive here. The menu is heavily influenced with Indian and Moroccan food and you can be sure to have one of the best currys in the city from this little gem! Just note that the place is not licenced so it’s not the ideal place to start a boozy night out! Brilliant all the same
